Cognitive Unconsciousness and Motivated Unconsciousness And Review of Subliminal Perception and Priming

Abstract

The world of today has experienced an exemplary inclusion of unconsciousness in the quest to understand human behavioral differences. This paper explores the main differences between motivated unconsciousness and cognitive unconsciousness based on the book Personality and Psychology: Domains of Knowledge about human nature by Larsen, R. and Buss, D.M (). It also outlines a review of the empirical work on subliminal perception and priming. From the findings, the most appealing type of unconsciousness has been included, along with the reasons for the selection of the type of unconsciousness. Finally, this paper employs a guide on new empirical research which may further help to distinguish between cognitive unconsciousness and motivated unconsciousness.

The Difference Between Cognitive Unconsciousness

and Motivated Unconsciousness

One of the most significant aspects of human psychology is mind unconsciousness. It owns a reasonable share in learning the importance of various attributes concerning human behaviors ( Ap Dijksterhuis, 2009). Different psychologists and researchers have presented different types of unconsciousness as well as dynamic patterns with which their findings predict human behavior.

What is the difference between cognitive unconsciousness and motivated unconsciousness?

Unconsciousness is a state of mind whereby the occurrence of normal and automatic goes unregistered in the brain. Psychoanalytic research shows that learning, memory, reporting, and integration of perceptive information occurs through an act of neurotic processes (Larsen, R. Buss, D.M,2018). Further study in cognitive psychology shows that cognitive unconsciousness is mostly dependent on information, experiences, and thoughts which happened in the conscious state (Kilhstrom, 1987).

On the other hand, motivated unconsciousness is defined as an archive of occurrences that occur in a state of wakefulness and that elevate the desire of certain human behaviors (Kilhstrom, 1987).

Perception is the registration and reaction to levels of stimulus that happen in the unconscious state. If the stimulus registered affects the response to immediate stimulus without turning on the wakefulness of the mind, that is known as priming. The priming can be positive or negative depending on how fast information gets processed (Chartrand, 2000). Empirical research for subliminal perception and priming has been achieved through the taxonomic classification of the responsorial effects of stimulus to different clients. The levels of stimuli and amplification of the response towards the stimuli have been used by researchers to draw priming diagrams that have boosted predictability of human behaviors.

Between cognitive unconsciousness and motivated unconsciousness, which one would I favour and why?

I would choose motivated unconsciousness because, according to research, a person can be helped to bring unconsciousness thoughts under control while conscious and thus help in solving cognitive challenges (Chartrand, 2000).

Unlike in motivated unconsciousness, the qualitative advantages of cognitive unconsciousness may go unrecognized due to the absence of a driving factor.

Conclusions and Future Study

A lot of psychologists and neuroscientists have researched unconsciousness, there is a cluster of questions that remains hazy. A perfect differentiation between motivated unconsciousness and cognitive unconsciousness is far from being discovered. Therefore, there is a need to design a fruitful approach to the study to further demystify the topic with accuracy and completeness. This can be done in two main aspects;

  • Through quantitative research- this is possible though experimental research on different clients and through conducting surveys to different clients.
  • Through qualitative research- This can be achieved through observations of the human behaviors with regards to memory, perception and response to environmental stimuli. It can also be achieved through conducting interviews to individuals based on related parameters. It is necessary to conduct profound studies on the neurotic and psychoanalytic consciousness to have solid roots of understanding unconsciousness.
