COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAY
What has attracted you to apply to the American International College Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program?
Everybody in life wants to achieve the best in life. But what is the “best” in life is not always offered everywhere. One of my goals since in graduate level was to emerge a prominent occupational therapist. Not just by the name but also with the necessary skills in the field to help many souls suffering back in my country. All what I needed was a quality education in the field which would be accompanied with an exposure to real life scenarios from time to time. Decent laboratory which could expose me to practical side of the field was another consideration which I could not overlook.
Lucky enough, after a long time of survey from one college to another; I landed on one college which I can say had been founded just for people of my caliber. And that was the American International College. It was back in 2015 at the moment and the pass out results had been just released by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy Inc. The institution had recorded a 100% pass out rate. It was unbelievable to many but to me not at all. Although we are warned of judging a book by its cover, I had already judged this book right from their mission as an institution to how its professors used to make their remarks whenever they got a chance in press as well as in career workshops. In 2016, they confirmed their pass out rate again and that was all I wanted to witness. I could not divert my attention from American International College.
What personal qualities and practical experiences will make you a good health care worker?
Being a healthy care worker not only entails being smart academically but also it is a calling which someone must have for him or her to be successful in the career without much struggle. And the lack of calling has resulted to many health care practitioners resigning from their duties because of the experiences and frustrations they undergo in their line of duty. Some lack qualities which are very essential in the field while others lack the experience. Being a son of a doctor, my mother’s experiences for the twenty years she raised me at the hospital quarters taught me several lessons. One, human life is very important and should be taken care of at all the cost and secondly, as a health care practitioner sacrificing is the key to be successful. And that was enough experience over the twenty years before my mother retired.
In addition to such a wonderful experience from my mother, I believe to have a number of personal qualities which will make me succeed in my health care career.
Emotional stability
Hospitals and healthcare facilities being some of the workplaces unpleasant for people with extra sympathy levels, my stability in emotional traits will enable me maintain calmness whenever I encounter patients under different scenarios of pain, sorrow, illness and even death.
Keen eye for detail
From my tender age, the quality of exercising keenness in any activity I undertake has been part and parcel of me. And considering that in healthcare field I will be responsible for various activities which requires a lot of attention like diagnosis, assessment and medication, this quality will highly help me undertake these activities with little or no error at all.
