Communicating differences
In this essay, we examine the climatic changes that are affecting Australia, with several incidents that have occurred over some time. Calamities such as wildfires and rising temperatures are affecting the normalcy of livelihood in Australia. Changes in climate have had drastic effects and accelerated events within Australia. I strongly argue that changes in the environment have had a significant impact on indigenous and non-indigenous Australians who are affected directly or indirectly while liberating gender balance and equity both in institutions and politically. Violence has also been on the rise due to climate change affiliated calamities leading to sourcing of alternative means of survival.
March 2020 marks the end of a devastating wildfire that has been ranging in Australia, destroying an estimated 11,000 hectares of land and rendering about 30million people homeless. It has caused the destruction of property and interfered with wild animals almost to extinction. This is a big blow to the Australian government, which is well known for effort in the conservation of wildlife and the environment. This calamity has been due to the rise in temperature in Australia and around the world, which has led to such disastrous disasters. (Phillips and Nogrady. Nature p-577-612. 2020). A recent summit was held, mainly based on climate change and the effects it has caused in the region. This comes as a result of emissions of greenhouse gases, which have led to an increase in environmental degradation.
Indigenous Australians have been affected by such changes by affecting their way of livelihood. Indigenous Australians are known to inhabit most of the forested areas in Australia, where they practice their cultures and conserve the environment. Climate change has had a drastic impact on them due to the destruction of the forests and places where they formerly inhabited. It has interfered with sources of water that they were dependent on and burned down farms where they could get their source of food and income. These calamities have made them change their livelihoods and embrace new cultures and ways of survival. The indigenous people of Australia have been forced to change their cultural lifestyle and are now living the non-indigenous together due to the environmental changes, and this is backed by the change in population pattern where there are fewer indigenous people living in their cultural places. Some traditions have vanished and are no longer practiced a scenario that has been attributed by the non-indigenous people who have inhabited the area and changed the cultures and ways of living among the indigenous people. The media has also failed the aboriginal study due to biased claims and disregard for the indigenous people by not showing how such events caused by climate change gave affected the traditions and living of the indigenous groups. The media’s political biasness against the aboriginals has made them lack proper representation in the assembly, giving them fewer chances of sharing their grievances and what needs to be done to restore the environment. The fight for climate change should not be biased or represented by one community or group but should be acknowledged by all to achieve success.
Gender has had a significant impact on climate change and is not biased in any way. The fight against pollution and greenhouse emission is not gender-relevant as both male, female, and transgender can keep measures in place to counter the effects of climate change. The fight against climate change has no regard for indigenous people or to which gender they belong. Environmental conservation, an important aspect of ecological maintenance, has seen gender balance within it with various groups of variable gender being involved. Gender has a big impact on environmental conservation since there are no legal laws that inhibit a certain gender or race from upholding the environment. Unlike indigenous identities limited to certain aspects due to how they are viewed by society, gender surpasses all the barriers such as media biasness and race. This gives a united front while tackling issues concerning climate change. The media has also boosted its activities by downplaying the gender gap while it comes to climate restoration. Gender indifferences within the government has been of concern with few female and transgender are given minimum opportunity to table their ideas on their take on climate change. Such biased governments are being influenced by the taking of the world on gender inequalities with women and transgender being given fewer privileges in comparison with meth that seems to be the dominant force in the government.
Violence is a major challenge in the curb against climate change with several reported cases of robbery, rape, murder, and torture of people who are against the destruction of the environment. This is also gender affiliated with the most likely victims being women and children who are targeted as weak links in the fight to conserve the environment. The efforts kept in place to reduce the risk of violence are not effective and are negatively viewed by the media and other personnel who are victims of such cases. Multiculturalism has led to an increase in violence in that people of one culture become violent towards other cultures due to the difference in beliefs and practices. This has caused death through communal clashes with communities blaming each other on the events of such circumstances. Religion-based violence is on the rise due to the acceptance of new religions with different understandings and views on climate change. ( ) Media in Australia is biased against male violence and sexual abuse. This can be related to many untold cases that are happening to male citizens. This creates an unfair ruling with one gender is being undermined by the other.
Most indigenous Australians are being affected by the activities of the non-indigenous through pollution of the environment and water catchment areas, which comes as a setback against the conditions kept restoring the environment. In comparison, multicultural activities have led to more climate change in Australia that effects brought about by gender imbalance or biasness. Activities of most non-indigenous communities like coal mining have led to the deterioration of the environment while increasing the rate of violence within the country. Indigenous communities are known for their negative take on women and transgender ( ). This has led to increasing violence against homosexuality and transgender as they are perceived to be lesser people in the community. This has affected the effort of all gender in the fight for climate change, where some are unable to perform their responsibilities due to mistreatment from indigenous communities resulting in violence. Gender imbalance in government institutions and politics has led to the oppression of indigenous people as well as influenced violence against a particular gender by illegalizing marriages among one gender. This has been witnessed by the jailing and brutal killing of transgender and homosexuals due to the laws by the government. Violence towards non-indigenous people by the aboriginals is a major setback in climate conservation and environmental stability as they are attached while performing their duties trying to curb these calamities. These situations of cultural differences and gender inequality have increase violence both from aboriginals and the migrants who come in such refuge.
In conclusion, climate change is a sensitive issue that needs to be addressed not only by the Australian government but worldwide. The experience of calamities such as wildfire and prolonged droughts can be overcome by simple coexistence between the indigenous and non-indigenous communities within the country. Laws regarding gender should be reviewed in order to curb violence and biasness towards one gender. Racial discrimination has led to violence in many parts of Australia, while peaceful coexistence can be achieved. The fight against climate change should not bring separation within people of different cultures but should act as a unifying factor bringing together all races, gender, and cultures. On violence, strict measures should be kept in place with severe punishment for those who break the law by causing violence
