COMMUNITY ACTION REPORT
Practicum 2/3
I will discuss two events I attend in my community action report. The first is called ‘Honors and award ceremony’; a musical concert set up by a band director along with some students who are members of the band immediately school reopens. The second is a step contest performed by some 20 young Mc Nair ladies. .From events, it was worth noting the priority of parents and students and how the community and parents will be involved in activities as long as they are interested.
The honors and award ceremony was a celebration of the band’s achievements and acknowledged the students who had received prizes. Many of the few students shortlisted in the district averaged in proficient and distinguished in playing their instruments. To my surprise, the community showed up in large numbers than any other event ever hosted in the school. There were various races, even though the band was mainly composed of African Americans. The audience was very enthusiastic throughout the concert as the skilled musicians had an excellent choice of music. What stood out was how the community participated in the event. In the step contest, the audience in the first event was utterly alike. The community attended in great numbers and was very enthusiastic. Many steppers had come from all around the state competing to get a chance the nationals, which only had two slots. I had attended many steps, dance, and cheerleading competitions at the collegiate levels; this was the first with young competitors. I was stunned by the 12-14-year-olds who were skilled and participated at this level. The thrilled audience kept on cheering and took photos of the contestants throughout the amazing event.
It was interesting to note that the parents and community at large are more interested in the events than the students’ academics. If the school were to host two events involving the curriculum, say debates, and extracurricular activities such as the step competition on the same day, the community would definitely choose to attend the step competition over the curriculum event. The members of the community concerned with the academic progress of the school are few. The reason for this could be due to the school’s poor academic performance. People tend to be involved in successful activities. The community will only be interested in curricular activities of a school that is prone to failure only when the school starts being innovative and shows the progress that will give the community something to be thrilled about (Fabricant Fine 2012).this is depicted by the book ‘charter schools and the corporate takeover of public education. Another key factor in getting the community involved is ensuring proper communication. We have to understand the community, including their culture, to come up with acceptable ways of incorporating them in school’s curricular activities. (Michelle Garcia 2008). Understanding the community will shade so much light on what the community likes and thus is an effective way of making them participate in student’s academics.
Finally, the school should arrange more events that would be a platform for students to show their talents and achievements. Without a doubt, this will make the community involved, as they will be excited to see their children.
