Discussion

Annise Parker’s interview results on education trends

Following an interview administered to Annise Parker, a former Houston Mayor, education has grown from simple numerical aspects to digitalization. According to Parker, the currents system of education incorporates different elements that were absent in the earlier learning systems. For instance, in the present mode, computerization is widely practiced. Students do not take computing as a different course from classwork but apply the methods in learning (Freiberger, 2017). The approach has led to the development of apps that trains students, create support alongside providing support for educators.

In the past decades, education was limited to classroom affairs, where the medium of interaction was pen and paper. Computing was viewed as an approach that targeted few individuals in society, most of whom became considered as “highly literate.” Thus, the application was significantly limited in comparison to the present world. Parker also states that the current curriculum gets based on digital literacy. As a result, children are introduced to computing as soon as they are aware of their existing environment. Such become evident through the incorporation of children’s phones, tablets, and computer games. A belief is that early interaction with computing helps a child to familiarize themselves with upcoming computer schemes (Kasami, 2018).

However, Parker indicates that despite the benefits accrued to digital literacy, challenges develop, bringing difficulties in the education sector. For instance, through time, a high rank was given to library specialists. Presently, their role declines as the employment scope become narrowed as students can easily access online information. Therefore, in a way, digitalization fails to incorporate the specialists in educational forums.

Challenges are also noticed concerning the existence of various cultures. Presently, students come from different backgrounds, some of which have not fully upheld digital mediums regarding education (Gogus, 2015). Thus, most of them are still rooted in the traditional education methods that involve the use of paper. In some cases, computerization becomes associated with the Western cultures, thus a limitation of its application in other regions. Such situations prevent the broader acceptance of digitalization by individuals who perceive it as contributing to laziness among the students.

In a way, the approach or view leads to divisiveness. Parker states that the lack of a common forum for agreement leads to a bone of content between those accepting digitalization and the rejects. At some point, education becomes inclusive, and the students may get learning opportunities in foreign countries. In such cases, there arises a division amongst students who accept computerization and those who reject the approach (Johnson, 2014). Therefore, such situations bring in several difficulties regarding the appropriate mediums of facilitating educative schemes.

However, despite the weaknesses, the changes also contain several strengths considering the world’s changing situations. Presently, most of the activities are computerized as different organizations move from standard formats to digital mediums. Therefore, in fields like employment, students having a background in information technology have an easy way to maneuver the different sectors (Johnson, 2014). However, individuals having limited interactions with computing systems face challenges in securing multiple jobs. Such cases, present the advantage of digitalization, as a trend in economic growth, in the employment field. Few restrictions exist on the use of computing among students. The current educational set up permits the use of internet network techniques like Wi-Fi.

Thus, using the smart-technology, the students can deviate from the coursework to different sites and games, not helpful in education. In outlining the problems, the number of African American teachers is few in the various educational centers. One reason can become attributed to factors such as prejudice or racism that gives the White teachers an upper hand in this field (Batchelor, 2015). Moreover, there is also a belief that most blacks lack computer literacy, a factor that appears correct. Educational training institutions are also packed with the Whites, giving African American trainees’ limited chances. The approaches serve to limit the number of black teachers, a factor that requires adjustment in the educational set up.

Conclusion

The aspects of education cover both the classroom environment and the external community surrounding a student. Present mediums of education include the application of digitalization to enhance studies among individuals. On a scale, the approach appears capable despite the disadvantages it contains. Beneficial reasons include providing a ground to facilitate adjustments into new employment fields, alongside ease in displaying of information. However, not all the cultures accept the educational trends, something that hinders the application of mediums like computing. African American tutors are also few, following their prejudice about illiteracy. According to Parker, the development of better strategies and strategies in education will help in strengthening the various structures.
