Concepts of Scholarly Writing
As defined earlier, scholarly writing, also known as academic writing, can simply be described as writing that is completed for scholarly purposes such as conference presentations or proceedings, book chapters, articles in scholarly journals, and other forms of academic, competitive, and peer-reviewed outlets. It is composed of four key concepts that one should understand when incorporating them into their writing. These are purpose, audience, presence of bias, and quality of evidence. In this discussion, we shall consider the audience as one of the critical concepts of scholarly writing.
An audience can be defined as a group of people who read a particular piece of work. For example, a scholarly paper written in the field of Behavioral Healthcare Management may be intended for an instructor, a classmate, or a researcher. When writing an academic article, it is essential to determine your audience by considering who they are, what level of information they have about the subject, and the context in which they will be reading the piece of writing. The audience may be academic or nonacademic.
Three types of audiences need to be considered when developing a scholarly paper. These are the lay, managerial, and expert audiences. The lay audience consists of those who have no specialized knowledge on the subject of the article. The managerial audience is one who has some insight into the subject but needs more facts to make an informed decision. BHM personnel will consult a scholarly article for some facts when faced with an issue to solve in this field. The expert audience is the most demanding in terms of knowledge, presentations, and graphics or visuals.
