Conditions for human survival
Since time memorial, human beings have been trying their level best to make the world a better place for their existence. The first step towards improving people’s living conditions around the world is by first making one’s immediate society ideal for survival. An ideal society can, therefore, be described as one that has individuals working for the sake of achieving a common goal.Apart from making sure that activities are being run smoothly, the other objective of people living in a particular society is to ensure that there are survival and continuation of the human generation. As a result, several philosophers have come up with ideas that should be followed if an ideal society is to be attained. An excellent example of these thinkers is Dr. Martin Luther King, who contributed immensely to the act of fighting for civil rights. This essay seeks to state with reasons, the three most essential qualities of an ideal society.
Firstly, an ideal society should have a controlled system of government. Thomas More states that in a good community, the government should ensure that democratic administration is being conducted.A monitored system of government ensures that order is experienced within a given society. Additionally, democracy should be witnessed, which often leads to fairness while choosing leaders. All members of a particular community should be treated equally. Martin Luther King, while giving his speech, talked of the brutal things blacks in America were being subjected to by the government. Luther further lamented that the blacks were denied the chance of voting something that should not be witnessed in the USA after signing of the Emancipation proclamation. In the song “Imagine”, John Lennon suggests that the world would be a better place if there were no countries, fights amongst people and religious differences. The movie “Animal farm” clearly shows that for a society to be perfect, there should be a controlled system of government. John Stephen, the director of the movie, uses animal characters to show theactual characteristics of human beings. At first, animals overthrow Mr. Jones as their head because of his evil characters, such as being a drunkard and mistreating of animals. Napoleon, who is even eviler, takes over as the head of other animals.As a result, Boxer is killed by Napoleon after being overworked instead of being taken to hospital.The movie “Animal farm” shows how a corrupt system of government can affect innocent people in a particular society.
Secondly, personal respect and liberty should exist between members of a good society. Respect is very vital in a given society since it enables individuals to have their desired freedom. As a result, peace is always evident because of reduced disagreements. According to the following words by Martin Luther King,” One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land,” it is clear that black people were not respected in the United States of America. For instance, they were made to be slaves in their land. Another individual that advocated for personal respect in America is Langston Hughes. In his poem, the line “And yet must be-the land where every man is free” shows liberty is vital for a society to be ideal. John Lennon, in his song, suggests that the world would be a better place if brotherhood prevailed. Brotherhood can only be achieved in society if respect exists amongst people occupying that particular area. In the Animal Farm movie, there are many instances where characters did disrespect each other, which made their society to be evil. For example, Napoleon blamed Snowball for destroying the windmill while deep down, he knew that John and his wife were the ones responsible for the destruction. Another incidence of disrespect is observed when pigs become greedy and eat all the food making other animals remain hungry. Napoleon decides that all hens will remain hungry after refusing to surrender their eggs. This happened after Napoleon claimed Snowball was the reason as to why the food shortage was being experienced. Eventually, all animals get divided because of the lack of respect amongst themselves.
All members of a particular society should be treated the same, even if they are from different social statuses.The effect of equal treatment of people within a society is that there will be minimal cases of rebellion towards leaders. In his work, More advocated for social justice towards Utopians. Martin Luther King fought for equal treatment between blacks and whites in America. In his speech, Martin blames the US government for failing to fulfil its promise of ensuring that black people are granted the right to pursue happiness. He further says that black people will not rest until the governmentgives them the same rights as whites. Judy Garland, in the song “Over the Rainbow,” suggests that everything can be achieved no matter how impossible it might appear. From Judy’s song, it is evident that social justice can also be achieved in a particular society. “Imagine all the people sharing the world” is an example of a line in John Lennon’s song showing how he wished all people could be treated the same. In his speech, Luther King insists that there is a day when black people will have freedom as well as receive the same treatment as whites. Lastly, the movie “Animal Farm” contains enough evidence which shows that lack of social justice within a given society can lead to disunity.For instance, the fact that pigs were being treated specially after Napoleon took over as a leader brought disunity between all animals on the farm. For example, pigs broke the rule, which stated that all animals were not allowed to take alcohol. Instead, the law did enable animals to take alcohol in excessive amounts, especially after pigs start purchasing it from Pilkington.
In conclusion, everyone in a particular community should strive to ensure that all the conditions around them are conducive to human survival. It should be noted that there are a lot of qualities that should be considered while checking whether a particular society is ideal. However, this essay has only focused on the three main characteristics of a good society.In my essay, I have used the work of great philosophers such as Martin Luther King and Thomas More to support my points because they advocated for equal treatment of all human beings. Musicians and movie directors were also passionate about the issue of creating the right conditions for humans to survive. Examples being John Lennon, Judy Garland and John Stephenson respectively.
