Contact sports: is it worthwhile?
Most high school athletes that play sports look forward to or hope to continue their education through attending college, however; one must consider one of the few disadvantages of contact sports due to the risk of serious injury such as: concussions.
Rugby in particular is an international game that is free flowing. According to Rugby Warfare “A Scientific Take On the Old Rugby vs. American Football Debate, 2018, rugby originated in the 1800’s in England by a man named, William Webb Ellis. Ellis was playing soccer (also known as football), picked up the ball, and ran towards the opponents goal line thereby creating what was the first rules of rugby. In playing rugby the ball must be passed back by a player while moving forward.
According to World Rugby, “A Beginner’s Guide to Rugby”, rugby can be played in many different ways such as: tag, touch, and rugby sevens which is commonly played. Each team is split up into age groups by U10, U12, U15, 16, 17, up to adults. Most high schools and colleges play rugby sevens which is a full contact 7 versus 7 game.
