Contemporary Business Practice on the Environment

Introduction

The contemporary business environment has been diverse and unpredictable due to the financial recession facing the global market. Therefore, firms have decided to adopt achievable business changes that will assist in increasing the value of their operational framework. However, the adoption of the changes has resulted in effects on the ecological environment. The paper explores how contemporary business practices have affected the environment through pollution and management of production by recycling and increasing e-commerce to prevent the impacts caused to the environment.

Effects of the business practice on the environment

Air Pollution

Contemporary business, including firms involved in the production of electricity, has been competitive as a result of the increased establishment of firms that require an abundant supply of power. The energy-producing firms find ways of ensuring that it has a power supply (Trudel, Argo, & Meng, 2016, p. 254). The various organization get engaged in the use of non-renewable sources including coal in the production of electricity which accounts for two-thirds of the CO2 emission that causes environmental destruction (Dicken, 2015, p. 285). The production and transportation of the coal is a significant cause of the pollution in the environment as it results in depletion of the ozone layer. Road transport accounts for 12% of emission, thus causing global warming (Dicken, 2015, p. 285). The increased temperatures result in the shifting of climatic change that causes drought in various places (Sui & Rejeski, p. 155). Additionally, it causes increased rainfall in specific areas causing floods and rising of the seas levels from melting of polar ice which may affect the cities located along the coast as the increased water level may restructure the coastline (Dicken, 2015, p. 230).

Poor Disposal of Waste Products

Additionally, the increased global population forces the contemporary business to engage in excessive production of goods and services to satisfy the peoples’ demand. The products include excessive production of furniture, clothing, production of cosmetics, foods, beverages, vehicles, chemicals, metals, paper and increased construction of buildings  (Mohr & Metcalf, 2017, p. 6).  The most technology has been employed to enable faster manufacturing of clothes to cater for the increased population. Furthermore, the high production of clothes has been pushed by the social and cultural forces that have resulted in peoples’ desires to express their culture through the dressing. Therefore, the increased production of the products is accompanied by the release of hazardous waste that affects the environment (Mohr & Metcalf, 2017, p. 6). For instance, the creation of food and beverages increases the generation of animal waste, and the use of refrigerants while the destruction of the ecosystem for the production of space for construction and urban development (Dicken, 2015, p. 282). Vehicle manufacturing and furniture include the release of ignitable waste, paint waste, strong acids and bases.  In this regard, ignitable waste can create fire under a specific condition when dispersed, destroying animals and plants (Dicken, 2015, p. 282). Furthermore, the toxicity waste, including nitrogen oxide, sulphur dioxide in the form of acidic rain results in fatal and harmful effects when absorbed or ingested. Consequently, it will cause leaching of the underground water that result in chronical problems when consumed by people or animals and corrodes the building (Dicken, 2015, p. 288).

Management of Production

Use of Online Marketing

The innovation of e-commerce on the production and marketing of contemporary business products can result in the reversion of the effects caused by the practices of organizations. Encouraging the manufacture of products based on e-commerce assist in solving the solution as various ways of marketing, including pixels, are considered than the packaging (Sui & Rejeski, p. 155). Additionally, the e-commerce reduces wastage in the printing of the catalogue, recording of telephone books, magazines and newspapers. The products cause pollution to the environments as various products in the products of the books are obtained from tree products that may cause deforestation and global warming (Sui & Rejeski, p. 156). Moreover, online marketing reduces the establishments of market centres, thus increasing the clearance of land. E-commerce turns various homes into the virtual shopping malls thus reducing the movement of buyers into market centres saving the consumption of fuels destroying the ozone layer causing drought and global warming on the environment (Mohr & Metcalf, 2017, p. 6). Furthermore, various rules should be set to regulate and deregulate the transportation and communication systems. Transportation of multiple materials such as coal for the production of electricity has been among the cause of population. In this regard, large express couriers should be limited  (Dicken, 2015, p. 288). Additionally, asset-based logistics, including warehousing, should be carried in the same place and should be distributed to reduce the destruction of wildlife for the expansion, which may act as a form of pollution. Water transportation through the ships is stated to burn 350 tonnes of fuel in a day, thus emitting 300,000 tonnes of CO2 in a year (Dicken, 2015, p. 288).

Recycling of Waste Products

The increased production by the contemporary business to satisfy the demand of the increased population, which cause a release of excessive waste in the environment may destroy the environment through the different forms of pollution. In this regard, a solution to the re-creating value of the debris from industries may result in a reversal of the environmental impact of the contemporary business (Trudel, Argo, & Meng, 2016, p. 252). In the production of the products by the firms, each practice of the company, including manufacturing, distribution and consumption has an opportunity of recycling the waste into a useful product (Trudel, Argo, & Meng, 2016, p. 253). The industries must engage in waste recycling strategies that include creating markets for the sale of scrap metals, and papers. The recycling may result in the reduction of greenhouse emissions and pollution that may have been caused by scrap materials such as degrading soil thus reducing the rate of food production (Dicken, 2015, p. 288). The recycling of products is stated to cause acidic rain, smog and contamination of water sources. Additionally, e-commerce assists in marketing the recycled and used materials, thus preventing the waste of the products. In this regard, e-commerce enables auctioning of the products, thus declining the energy intensity in the environment (Trudel, Argo, & Meng, 2016, p. 260).

Conclusion

The contemporary business practice of production and marketing of their products has created an impact on the ecological environment, including the destruction of the ecosystem and depletion of the ozone layer that results in global warming. Therefore, through the recycling and encouragement of e-commerce, less disposal of waste products and elimination of the ecosystem will occur.
