Contribution of Cellphones to Declining Grades
There are limitations to electronic devices despite its general benefits such as providing information. Electronic devices such as laptops and cellphones is destructive to students’ ability to concentrate while in classrooms. There are some students who can claim that they can multi task although there are less chances of completing particular tasks. There are several pieces of research to prove the negative effect of utilizing technological devices in classroom. There is one research indicating that smart phones reduces ones thinking capability. Scientists claim that divided attention causes one to recall less; a concept psychologically termed as retention. The ability for a student to remember less, eventually causes performance in exams. Dr. Arnold Glass, who is a professor and researcher at Rutgers University, is concerned about the impact that technology has on classrooms even after been initially optimistic.
Further research as published in the Educational Psychology Journal, shows that students utilizing cell phones and laptops eventually scored low grades. The students who were in the same class as those using the devices also scored low grades because of destruction. The findings from different pieces of research show many dedicated instructors and students that there is subtle effect of divided attention on class performance and ultimately grades. There is need for teachers to enlighten students regarding the damaging impact of interruptions on retention. Students have be aware that deciding to utilize devices in classrooms would affect the normal learning environment. There are some students who could perceive that smart phones would only affect their performance; thus the need for their tutors to enlighten them. The issue would certainly continue for a while because of continued advancements in technology.
