Corrections Management

The criminal justice system works to deliver justice to individuals that have committed a crime. Therefore, prisons are an essential part of the system whose purposes are retribution, rehabilitation, incapacitation and deterrence. Correctional facilities work to keep society safe by separating them from persons who have committed crimes. They strive to rehabilitate prisoners into law-abiding individuals.

The course helps an individual to identify the clear distinctions between the corrections facility and other types of holding facilities. Peak and Giacomazzi (2019) assert that with correction facilities there contain a society within a society since there are numerous employees from different fields present. Such personnel include; chaplains, educational instructors, mental health physicians and food service workers among a multitude of other people. All these persons work in tandem with the administrative and security workforce in helping the prisoners. Therefore they have to get some form of training, enabling them to perform their duties securely.

Additionally, the course identifies that the corrections facilities work just as organizations do.  There is a compact administrative system where each person has their role to play, and they do it with due diligence. The warden is in charge of the safety and security of all the staff and inmates within the prison. Admittedly they are perceived to have the most difficult tasks as they have to account for all parties involved the inmates, staff, directors and legal system when making and implementing policies for the facility. They also have to allocate resources effectively avoiding misappropriation. The custodial staff; captains, lieutenants, sergeants and correctional officer’s work together with the warden to offer security and order in the facilities.

To one who intends to pursue the administration of justice, the course offers guidelines on how to be an effective leader through Dilulio’s principles of leadership (Peak & Giacomazzi, 2019).  According to the laws, management has to know and understand all the prisoners’ needs; they also have to make connections with influential persons outside of the prison. Through the course, one can appreciate that personnel in the justice system aspire to change people’s lives they are passionate about their jobs.

Training is a vital part of any organization, and so is the case for the criminal justice system. Staff in a prison setting ought to be trained continuously on issues of mental health, inmate management, dealing with drug addiction and the most crucial aspect of the policies of the prison. Training helps them deal with problems better as they are at the forefront of implementing justice in society. Corruption is prevalent in prisons, and ethical training aids to get rid of that practice. For one to work in the justice administration system, they have to have specific educational qualifications. Background, polygraph and drug tests are done for personnel in the system since they get to be in charge of other human beings such considerations have to be made (Career Profiles, 2020).

The society is of the assumption that the justice system takes the death penalty lightly. None the less that is not the case Peak and Giacomazzi (2019), state that executions are carried out by highly trained professionals in the presence of the warden or a representative. For a probation and parole officer, they ought to possess excellent interpersonal, communication and, decision-making skills as they work closely with rehabilitated individuals. Persons in the justice system are also prone to stress as they work in a violent environment. Management in prisons and jails now provides incentives to increase job satisfaction. They also share the workload equally to avoid stressing their staff increasing productivity.

Correctional facilities are now adapting to the structure of organizations treating their staff just as organizations do. It helps them manage criminals better, avoiding issues of insecurity and increasing job satisfaction. Additionally, causes of stress are addressed to increase productivity. Training is essential to maintain the credibility of the staff in the jails and prisons.
