Analysis
The piece “Avocado Toast” is a narration about a family that was once happy. A father, mother, and daughter lived happily, but one day, something awful happened and changed everything. The writer keeps the reader engaged through the use of curiosity. The writer does not tell the reader exactly what had happened. Rather he makes ambiguous statements that portray a gap of knowledge. The reader has no option but fills in the gap using his own imagination of what might have happened. For instance, after the father and the daughter leave the house, the wife gets a call from her husband. The writer does not explain what happened, but we could derive that the daughter died in an accident, while the dad was driving. He blamed himself.
Curiosity is also seen at the end of the narrative. After the woman makes breakfast, she enters a bathtub. The narrative ends as she reads the letter, “I just want to see our daughter again.” The reader is left wondering whether she kills herself too. One major writing device used widely in the narrative is a pathetic fallacy. He relates the mode of the characters with the weather in the narrative. At the beginning of the narrative, the writer explains how bright the sun shone and birds sang. It was indeed a beautiful morning. The characters in the narrative were happy. However, after the daughter dies, the rest of the mornings were cold and colorless. The birds did not sing. The characters were mourning for their daughter’s death. The writer uses onomatopoeia, where he uses sounds instead of the actual words; this only makes the story more interesting.
The narrative is a well-written piece. It is interesting, and the aspect of curiosity only makes the reader more engaged. It keeps the reader on toes, wondering what to expect. It also leaves the reader yearning for more. The story is also written in simple English, that any reader can understand. There is a good flow of ideas throughout the story as the writer makes good use of transitions. From the top, the reader takes us through the happy moments of the family, the tragedy that hit the family, and the aftermath of the tragedy. This is advantageous as the reader does not go get lost on the way. It encourages the reader to keep reading. The writer also engages the reader in writing by allowing him to contribute to making the story interesting. The reader gets to decide if the daughter dies from a car accident, was the dad driving, was she hit by a car, etc. the disadvantage of the writing style is that the reader could also misinterpret the information as the writer does not give details of the story. The reader might assume that the woman either drowns herself or shocks herself by using the toaster. The writer is also not clear, especially when talking about the body and the avocado. Where he says, “the body was hollow.” It is difficult to understand if he talked about the avocado or the body she had plucked the heart out of.
