Critique Essay Checklist

  1. Is the title appealing and appropriate?  (You can use “Critique of Article Name” but a catchier title would be even better). Please note that there is no need for a cover page for this essay. Just add your name and ID at the top left-hand part of the essay.
  2. Have you included all of the necessary information in your introduction? (Do you provide the author’s name, the year of publication and the article name plus a strong verb and the author’s thesis? Do you provide background information about the author or the topic? A summary if applicable?)
  3. Is your evaluation of the article clearly stated in a thesis statement at the end of the introduction?
  4. Have you included a short accurate summary of the text in the introduction or the second paragraph of the essay?
  5. Does the critical analysis progress clearly and logically? Do you use transitions?
  6. Is the essay cohesive? Does each paragraph focus on one main idea? (For example, do you focus on one point from your thesis in each paragraph?)

  7. Do you evaluate the author’s thesis, arguments, evidence, ideas, structure, language, tone..etc? (You do not have to cover all of these obviously)
  8. Are your ideas supported with textual evidence (quotations and summaries)?
  9. Have you included at least three quotationsin your essay if you are critiquing an article? At least two if you are critiquing a documentary?)
  10. Are the quotations, paraphrases and summaries integrated appropriately into your writing? (Remember the quotation sandwich! Look at thePowerpoints under “Lecture Notes” for review.)
  11. Have you used different methods of introducing the quotation rather than the standard way (The author argues, claims, says…..etc). We discussed the various methods in class and you can look up the “Steps in Quoting PPT” under “Lecture Notes” if you don’t remember
  12. Have you used an ellipse or a bracket when integrating your quotations? (Remember … or [])
  13. Do you provide analysis after each quotation? Do we hear your opinion or are you just summarizing the author’s ideas? We should be hearing your opinion!
  14. Have you included a conclusion which summarizes the ideas in your essay? Have you added a recommendation or a short discussion of the impact of the article at the end (or both if it’s a mixed review?) Did you address the comments I made in your conclusion?
  15. Is a formal, academic tone maintained? (No Internet words! No slang! Try to use advanced vocabulary. “Negative” instead of “bad”)
  16. Is the essay a minimum of 800 words?
  17. Is the essay free of errors?
  18. Have you proofread the paper for punctuationspelling, and typos? Reading aloud really helps!
  19. Is your essay double-spaced and typed in Times Roman font?
  20. Have you included intext citations as we discussed in class? Remember that you must add the year after the author’s name at the beginning of every new paragraph.
  21. If you have included research from the Internet to support your analysis (this is optional), have you used a signal phrase to tell us where the research came from? Have you added an intext citation after you include the research?
