Critique of a Research Article as it Relates to a Clinical Problem
“The Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice (JHNEBP) model is a powerful problem-solving approach to clinical decision-making, and is accompanied by user-friendly tools to guide individual or group use. It is designed specifically to meet the needs of the practicing nurse and uses a three-step process called PET: practice question, evidence, and translation. The goal of the model is to ensure that the latest research findings and best practices are quickly and appropriately incorporated into patient care.” Reference:Don′t click on this website- it will deny access to you. https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/evidence-based-practice/ijhn_2017_ebp.html(Don′t click on this site- it will deny access to you). Directions for final Project: Step 1: Refer back to the clinical problem that you identified and made your PIO or PICO question. [unique_solution]″In patients who are admitted medical step down level of care does boarding them in the emergency department when there are no available beds increase the risk of poorer outcomes?″ One of my biggest concern is the medical step down patients that are held in the Emergency department for days because there are only 10 beds on that unit. Some times the patients are held because there is no room and sometimes it is because they want to wait until patient can be downgraded to floor or telemetry. The nurse-patient ratio for medical step down is 2-1 and the emergency department nurse-patient ratio is 5-1. With that being said it is safe to say that these patients are not getting the care that they need. On top of the ratios the teams aren′t always there like they are on the unit so we have to place calls and wait, sometimes a while, before the team comes to evaulate. In around half of the cases these patients who board for days end up needing intensive care and are upgraded due to their decline. I think that this is based on they are not getting the support the require. Step 2: Go to Steely Library online and find one relevant single research quantitative study article which addresses the problem of your PIO or PICO question. Try to find either a randomized controlled trial or a single research quantitative study so you can follow the example below and easily complete your first critique using such a tool. Save the pdf file of your article and submit a copy of it with your final project. Here is an example of a research article and a completed John Hopkins Research Appraisal Tool.
