Current Issue in Asia
The South China Sea is considered as one of the busiest waterways in the world, and disputes over the ownership of the waterway have existed for several decades. The South China Sea is a key feature for commercial activities between Asia and Europe. Because of the trade significance of the South China Sea in Asia and Europe, several disputes involving island and maritime claims among several states exist. Geopolitics in the South China Sea between the United States and China on who should control the South China Sea border still exist, and solution is currently required to end the conflict.
China and the United States have been in dispute over the South China Sea because almost one –third of the world’s maritime trade transits the South China Sea (Teo, 2018). Therefore, each country wants to have control over the South China Sea to gain the economic benefits arising from the waterway. Also, there is possibility of undiscovered valuable seabed resources in the disputed region. Large container ships and modern-day camels have to pass through the South China Sea because the waterway connects big part of the world. Geopolitics disputes between China and the United States continue because each state wants to have the benefits of controlling the region. However, there is a need for a permanent solution to end the disputes. On my view, the only method that can be useful in solving the dispute between China and the United States over the South Sea is engaging the leaders in negotiations. The leaders of the two countries should come together and peacefully negotiate on how they should share the South Sea China border benefits to end the conflicts.
In conclusion, geopolitical disputes between China and the United States over the South China Sea have been a major challenge between the two superpower countries over the last couple of years, and the problem still exists. The portion of the South Sea China has been a region of conflict because most of the world’s commercial activities are transacted through the South China Sea. Peaceful negotiations between China and the United States over how they should share the disputed border will bring the geopolitical dispute into an end.
