Data Mapping and Coding

            Data mapping and coding are essential processes applied in the healthcare system. HIM professionals rely on these processes to capture patient data that bear accuracy (Rains, Skurka, & White, 2017). Therefore, mapping is a process that associates elements of any given domain or set with items of another set. At the same time, coding is an operation that assigns codes to things based on identification or classification (DeAlmeida et al., 2019). The content of this paper is going to outline in detail how mapping and coding work hand-in-hand to showcase proper association and assignment of codes to various elements.

The table below maps the following stages of diagnosis in healthcare systems from SNOMED to the unique ICD-10-CM. However, some of the presented codes might have a one-to-many kind of relationship (Heslin et al., 2017).
