David R Goldfield

David R Goldfield is a renown American who writes and is a professional film director. He is also a professor. He has managed to write sixteen books. Being from the south, he has written a lot about the state of the southern part of the united states. Goldfield is originally fro Tennessee, in Memphis. He wrote a lot concerning the state of affairs in the south. In his paper and essay that they wrote it together with Wilson, they try to explain where the dominant white narrative emanated from, between the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth. He draws and makes pointed arguments concerning the south. He postulates and goes further to make links between the mythology that emerged about the lost cause from the chaos that happened due to the confederate loss. The profiling of the south also caused it to intolerance and the Protestantism and evangelicalism of the south. It changes the point of one view of history. He mixes; religion, history and culture in the southern region. His views and notes on this matter can make one feel threatened about their ancestry, history, salvation and worst of all their identity.

In the global age, he attempts to discuss and bring to light the southern religion and broadens his discussions from the insights and deliberations that arose from the Baptist of the south. They wanted and banned satan in Inglis and Florida in the proclamation of the march that was mayoral in 2002. When both Wilson and David are questioned about the ownership of the south, in turn, he answers by looking at different perspectives from the controversies of Thomas Jefferson sally to the most debated confederate flag to the museums that have history concerning African American and other monuments in the region. The letters by David are particular concerning events that occurred during this period.

Other authors help in the convening of truth and the occurrences in the south. One of them is Charles Reagan Willson, also wrote about the history of the south in his book on the invention of the south’s tradition. Reagan’s book mainly focuses on the different meanings of the spirits and some of the activities done in that period. He also explores the character that preceded the time. Charles Regan also trie to explain the traditions of the religious players and understand why it is essential. He shows that the south had very high spirit concerning the confederates when they went to the war and the irony also of how the region of how it went to prayer and song when ot came to the period of worship. Reagan Charles argues about the traditions from spiritual points of view. Reagen appreciates the various roles played by the activists and the identity issues that they were essential in the building of the culture.

Wilson’s theories on the building and invention of the southern culture match with the one on Goldfields, in more ways than one. Goldfield and Wilson agree on it by placing in the same time frame. According to them, the culture is portrayed to have begun in the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth. Wilson’s data and examination go wider than Goldfield’s. his article tries to focus on the expressions used, the original music made by the people from the south, the literature they make the folk art, the representations in the media and how imagery is portrayed by religion. By doing so, he explores and finds new understanding in the works of creative minds such as Richard Wright, Elvis Presley and William Faulkner, who were one of the biggest legends of their time. At the same time, he also focused on artists who had been studied not extensively but had something to say, for example, Mckendree long

From his studies, Wilson comes up with a proposition that the spirituality from the south is one that is often neglected and not adequately scrutinised as it should. He believes that there is more to the south that what we know currently. The south, when described by other authors or novelists they do not bring out how it should be according to Wilson. He shows and now opens up about how the interactions between the whites and the blacks in the region. Considering this is a very touchy subject, he does not leave out this fact and uses it for analysis and opening up the history on what makes up the culture and the traditions. One of the pioneers that witnessed all these is Pauli Murray

Pauli Murray or Anna Pauline was one of the American civil activists that fought for human rights and equality because of what she had witnessed being seated in a bus. Pauli Murray was one who was active against Jim crow’s laws and worked very hard to become a lawyer and advocate for them. Pauli was born and raised in the south but later moved to New York for her college education. Where she did Arts, but all that was about to change, one day in Virginia, as she was seated in a bus, in the whites-only section they were arrested for breaking the segregation laws. This incident and her involvement in the socialist’s defence league helped her pursue a career goal of working as an activist. Here she was to meet the most significant hurdles of ger life for who she was. Civil rights are not the only she witnessed, and she also got to see dangerous sexism in the universities she attended. She was a victim of Jim craw laws that enforced sexism and segregation. She came first in her class but could not do a post-graduate because of her gender. She, therefore, joined another university, that is Carolina.

She became a lawyer and started advocating for equal rights, as a woman and the black race. For her, the experiences were not so great from what we see in her excerpts. We also see Katharine DuPre Lumpkin in her book the lost cause of how she struggled in the south to address the issue of racism and bring out the plight of the black man. Katherine is a veteran from the south when it comes to resolving problems concerning slavery as she struggles to fight for civil rights. She was brought up in a family with slaves according to her book, the lost cause. It states that she lived in a veteran’s farm that had more than 1000 acres of land that had slaves. In jer case, slavery was not wrong initially because of how the father properly treated slaves. The father treated them with respect, but then she came to learn the truth from reading Jane Arther. Her experiences in her upbringing made her conscious also of what was happening, and that is she decided to become human rights activists.

From these we can conclude tha the experiences from the south varied from one person to another and what they focused one some of the writers chose to become activists after meeting with their encounters. The south is riddled with so much history; the writers wrote more on how the traditions were made. Some of them battled with these traditions. If culture and the religion part is looked upon too, there is understanding if it is looked into with in-depth. Some of the writers wrote about the struggles they had to go through to survive and what exactly turned them to activists and advocates for human rights and equality.
