DEATH PENALTY IS NOT SUFFICIENT TO DETER CRIME IN THE SOCIETY
INTRODUCTION
Dangerous and destructive crimes that are heinous attract strict penalties which include life sentences or even death.Death penalties studies and research have reached to different conclusions.Infact recent studies show negative correlations between executions and murder cases. This means increase in executions reduces murder cases. However, there is no enough evidence to prove that death penalties are sufficient to deter crime in the society.
BODY
Death penalty is not the solution to crime. Life is not the root to crime. Therefore, through ending life, crime cannot be eliminated. Deep in our societies lie the roots to crime. Hence dealing with societal vice is the only way to end and stop crime.
No criminal believes that at any one time they will ever be caught. They always think they are too smart. Considering death penalties are no longer executed in public the effect of deterrent has greatly reduced for people are always afraid of what they see. In terms of ranking the effective ways to control crime, death penalty is ranked last. Law enforcers have argued that sure and swift punishment cause more impact in terms of crime reductions (Meehan, 1982). Other ways to reduce crime includes; building stronger families and secure friendly neighbourhoods. Also ensuring a reduction of guns in circulation.
Another argument against death penalties as a tool towards crime reduction is that segments of the population that are mostly violet are unlikely to be terrified by these prospective punishments. These people leave in environments where they are more likely to be killed within their community by gangs than the state. Death cases are seen as part of their lives. Hence in such environments, a threat for death penalty is ineffective under such a violet society.
Furthermore, worst offenders get publicity that they don’t deserve through death penalties. It is proven that these can encourage other criminals to continue committing crime in exchange of such publicity. This will work the expected effects of reducing crimes.
Death penalties cause mixed reactions to the public, especially in terms by which criminals are chosen for the penalty. The criteria on how the wortst cases that deserve death sentences are selected are a great topic of discussion which leads to divisions in societies and therefore a favourable environment for more crimes. (p.Williams, 2015)
Also, there are social customs and many religious reasons that may cause people to oppose death penalties. When the public does not agree on how law is enforced there is lack of corporation in dealing with crime in the entire society. Some of the arguments include that the guilty also have a right to life.
CONCLUSION
In every society, efforts are done to ensure security, fairness and justice for all. In order for this to be achieved proper measures are put in place to curb with crimes and offences. V arious crimes and mistakes call for different measures on how to ensure justice for the victims . Some of the measures taken include even executing a death sentence. However a death sentence is not a remedy to the societal vices.
