Human beings have had various fundamental beliefs of what human rights should be and how they can be protected, which, however, some have had different opinions and which all together have been debated on various avenues. Human rights are generally defined as the most basic and rights and freedoms that all human beings must enjoy without limitation or regardless of sex or gender. The fundamental human rights include the right to birth, right to life, right to education and the right to work, among many others.
The debate of human rights has never been more severe and urgent as in the 20th century, where life and rights of persons are no longer respected.
Literature materials have also contributed to the sensitization campaigns and the teaching and pushing for the acknowledgment of the various human rights. The role of Literature has been to combine the literary driving forces and the action motivation (“Literature and Human Rights: Interdisciplinary Reflections on the Law, the Language and the Limitations of Human Rights Discourse Introduction” 102). Literature has been an integral part of the struggle for the recognition and protection of human rights over the years. For a fact, the little advancements and progress made as far as the protection and provision of human rights can be argued to have been enhanced significantly by human Literature.
The human rights literature has been concerned and committed to causing a change in societies as to how the societies perceive and the society’s beliefs about the human rights. It has, for the longest time, pursued change through engaged Literature to consciously address the issue of protection of human rights. Literature has acted as a mirror to societies over the years and has been able to act as a source of inspiration and guidance in society. Historical books and other literature materials about human life and the various beliefs are sources of information to generations and especially to political leaders who can protect the various human rights and especially during political conflicts.
Most countries, both western and African, suffer from bad governance. The rights of the people have been invaded for too long, with little effort from the political and governing class to combat the problems. Failure of action from the political class to protect human rights leaves the social activists and other organizations for protecting human rights, Literature as the only platform to speak of the evils (Wheatley 66). As such, Literature has been able to push for the recognition and protection of the rights of all human beings regardless of their gender, social status or even ethnicity.
In essence, human Literature on human rights addresses the problem of abuse of human rights through its readers by promoting and enhancing particular thoughts. Through human Literature, generations draw references and inspiration to pursue justice and equality. Literature boldly and with facts records the actual events in human life and how various conflicts have been solved, thus acting as sources of reference as well as a source of knowledge.
Regardless of all the contributions literature has had on the struggles for equity and protection of human rights, it has not been very effective in delivering justice. The literature lacks the power to enforce some policies, and some writers have also misused the platform by spreading propaganda. However, it is critical to note that Literature has had a significant role in advocating for the recognition of human rights throughout the history of humanity as it has been able to provide readers with material that has helped direct their actions.
