Discussion
I did not grow up wanting to be a law enforcement officer but wanted to serve my community and country in some way. However, it has been a long journey in life for me to become a law enforcement officer. I have served in the military for many years, a job I loved since I was playing a significant role in protecting my country and community at large. Later I joined the law enforcement where I have duties to enforce law and order in the society. The law enforcement officers have multiple responsibilities and expectations from their seniors and the community. The job can be challenging since we encounter different individuals who are dangerous. However, I take pride in our department, where I am committed to excellence in professionalism and maintain the highest standard of education in law enforcement. Also, as a police officer, I am guided by the integrity and principles of justice. Therefore, the job has made me always employ the highest ethical standards, fairness, accountability, and honesty in all my duties at work and home. However, law enforcement has taught me to be bold and vigilant of my surroundings. The most important approach is taking care of myself mentally since the work can be stressful. We, as cops, see so much negative, which can easily take your spirit. I have been a member of Critical Incidence Stress Management for the last five years, which has helped me to remain stable despite the numerous challenges which we encounter in our daily operations. I have seen many police officers committing suicide or engaging in other violent behaviors due to the stress at work. Still, I have dedicated much of my career to maintaining law and order in mainstream society. I have also become the voice for those who cannot advocate for themselves in the mentally ill world.
Most of the juveniles we encounter who engage in delinquent behaviors have mental illness and disorders. I have concerned about their well-being, and I feel these individuals require interventions and treatments in the rehabilitation centers. We encounter juveniles with different problems that encourage them to engage in crime, but I believe, as a police officer, I should also do my best to help these youths instead of putting them behind bars. I have never allowed the law enforcement job to define who I am, but it makes me be the best person I am meant to be, which is service to the nation and society. Many of the police officers have lost their personalities, and unfortunately, such cops end up alone at the end of their careers. Therefore, to help others in society, I have to take care of myself. I am also expected to exercise judgment and determine when to use force and to what degree. However, there is a challenge I usually encounter as a cop when it comes to using force. The situation is critical since there is no standard approach to determining the amount of force to apply in a given situation. The challenge has made me try to resolve the problem in a more rational approach and use force when I have no other option.
One of the duties assigned to us is the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and regulations. The responsibility has made me develop the quality of humanity, where I respect liberty and life. I am sensitive and inclusive of treating each individual with compassion and dignity. Therefore, we are assigned proactive patrols in particular areas. However, one of the most crucial aspects of law enforcement is working as teamwork among the officers.
In some cases, the situation might get worse, and we are expected to cover each other. As a law enforcement officer, I am required to be courageous by maintaining both mental and moral strength to resist opposition and maintain the fairness of mind. We are mandated to stand by fellow officers when faced by danger or difficulty. Communication and cooperation are other essential aspects of law enforcement. Therefore, the job has made me be a social individual in the community. Some members of the community also have a negative view of the police officers where they see us as violent and don’t feel comfortable in our presence, which makes patrolling to be challenging. However, I have decided to engage in community functions so that we can associate well with all members of the community. The approach also helps the community to share relevant information with the police officers and helps counter crime in society.
