DEPRESSION AND ANXIETY
Depression is mostly characterized by low moods, feelings of sadness, loneliness, and lack of interest. The majority of people who suffer from it report that there was a stressful event that triggered those particular feelings (Nemade, 2019). Early episodes of depression, if not controlled, predisposes a person to develop future depression episodes that can be triggered even with a small series of daily hassles. Stressful experiences which not necessarily have to be negative can trigger a depressive episode.
In a society full of people who interact daily, certain events could lead to depression. Factors such as the death of a loved one, especially the death of a parent or a spouse, can cause a mental breakdown to some people. Other factors include marital issues such as an affair or an abusive relationship. Retrenchment, homelessness either due to poverty or a natural disaster, violent families, breakups, and loss of friendships, feeling inferior due to lack of control in life. Recently with the rise of advanced technology and social media, a lot of social isolation has been witnessed. People rarely spend time together as they are glued on to their phones and the internet; the lack of social connection can drive one into depression and self-pity.
Severe traumas such as rape can trigger an intense, stressful reaction. Other examples include; neglect, rejection, murder, accidents, and torture. These events, especially when experienced in someone’s childhood, can lead to a condition known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Cohen et al., 2011). Victims tend to relive these experiences through nightmares and disturbing memories during the daytime. Lack of sleep and feeling numb or too sensitive can also result as a consequence of these factors. Other factors, such as having a baby or getting married, can also trigger depression (Trudel and Goldarf, 2010).
Albeit all these factors contributing to depression, there is still hope to counter-attack it by creating a strong support network. The social network provides a shoulder to lean on, guidance, love, and care that is necessary in times of crisis. Family members and friends can aid in restoring a sense of purpose and self-worth.
