Describe how evidence-based practice is different from research
Evidence-based practice is now a frequently used term nowadays when it comes to making clinical decisions. Sackett et al. define the evidence-based practice as the conscientious use of current best evidence in making decisions about individual patient care (as cited in Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015, p. 3). However, due to the need to provide high-quality care to allow for the best patient outcome at low cost, the definition of evidence-based practice has been broadened. Evidence-based practice now includes a systematic search, critical appraisal, and synthesis of the most relevant and best research to answer a burning clinical question (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2015, p. 3). Carnwell (2000) defines research as a systematic, planned investigation of a specified problem, with a predetermined outcome, which contributes to the understanding of a clinical question. The research project begins with identifying a problem to be investigated and ends with an outcome in the form of results and recommendations.
Highlighting the differences according to Carnwell (2000), research is used to investigate, the results of which will add to existing evidence. Evidence-based practice, on the other hand, aims to search for and appraise the best evidence. A research study ends with the outcome specified at the beginning of the study. Evidence-based practice, on the other hand, ends by making clinical decisions. Research is less concerned with existing evidence, relying instead on other research evidence to build up sufficient justification to conduct the investigation. In comparison, the evidence-based practice relies on a variety of evidence, including that arising from patients’ individual needs. How would you identify a research project as being an evidence-based intervention project versus the creation of knowledge in a nursing research project?
According to Carnwell (2000) in Table 1 evidence-based intervention project and nursing research project can be identified based on their title, introduction, problem statement, literature review, data collection method, interpretation, and discussion.

How do you see EBP’s role in your role as a DNP?
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is increasingly replacing research as a way of ensuring clinical effectiveness and decision making in the NHS (Carnwell,2000). Therefore, engaging in EBP as a DNP is essential to me because it involves the patients’ preference allowing the evidence that is collected to address patients’ individual needs. The use of EBP will enable me as DNP to make informed and safe decisions for my patients. Thus, ensuring positive patient outcomes.

According to Portney (2020), research and evidence-based practice are correlated concepts that relate to the identification and use of knowledge from research sources to clinical practice. Research involves a rigorous process to answer burning clinical questions or fill gaps in the documented medical literature. Evidence-based practice, on the other hand, is putting into practice the best evidence found out through research in patient care. Nursing research is significant in broadening knowledge and understanding the rationales of various nursing interventions. Nursing research projects can either be from created knowledge or, evidence-based research project. Evidence-based research project compares current nursing practices with the best evidence found from research project. While the knowledge creation research project only explores certain phenomena. As a DNP, EBP is significant because it allows me to cater to individual patient needs, which results in better patient outcomes and satisfaction. Braithwaite et al., (2018), postulates that the outcome of evidence-based practice has played a significant role in nursing education, practice, and science. Thus, the need for evidence-based practice is on healthcare transformation, which champions for safe, efficient, and effective care.
