Differences in Gender and Mental Health
Themes
The themes that the Geena Rocero discusses that are also discussed in the book are transgender equality and awareness. In the video, Rocero narrates the story of how she became a beauty queen in the Philippines and the United States. With the assistance of a transgender manager, Rocero was able to start a beauty pageant career. She acquaints the audience how she used the platform of the beauty pageant to discuss the acceptance of transgender into society. Initially, Rocero was terrified to come publicly and declare her gender. She was anxious about how the brutal world might treat her. The LGBTQ community has been degraded for a long time because it is seen as not sufficient compared to every single person around the globe. In the book, it is disclosed that transgender people are contented to have their social identity and bodily contours of the appropriate gender, though without the genital anatomy that often goes with the social entity (Rocero, 2014).
The themes of shame and stigma are evident in the video and book. Transgender populations always encounter high levels of both internalized and perceived social stigma, victimization, and discrimination. The lack of acceptance of the transgender populations in different environments deteriorates their self-confidence and capacity to engage in social events resulting in depression, distress, and other mental health issues (Rocero, 2014).
Advocate for Transgender People
One of the ways to be an advocate for transgender individuals is to know the issues that they face. Transgender persons encounter discrimination when getting precise identification documents, including passports and drivers’ licenses. I will realize and recognize that there exist more than two genders. Gender is a social construct and a diversity of identities. Individuals are stuck in a binary system that restrains them as humans (Chong, 2012). More than two genders characterize most of the cultures. Opinion
The thing that surprised me about the issues that transgender individuals face in their lives is discrimination, yet they behave just like any other human being.
