At a young age, my grandmother was diagnosed with dementia. Her condition drew me closer to studying and understanding the relationship between the mind and behavior we exhibit as humans. As her condition worsened, her behavior became unpredictable. I began to question the role of the brain in controlling one`s behavior and actions. My growing interest led me to undertake online classes in psychology and biology. I was intrigued by why humans behaved so differently, and I was curious to understand the theories behind all that. Does the brain solely control our behavior? Or does the environment also play a part in determining our behavior? On the other hand, I`m also fascinated by classic or dystopian novels that challenge my perception of psychology and human behavior. I easily get lost in the world of books as they help me explore a different mindset portrayed by the authors within their timeframe.
Within psychology, I got more interested in psychopathology, a study of the manifestation of extreme behaviors that are indicative of mental illness. I conducted further research into the topic to develop a deeper understanding of how such actions occur and the extent of their impact on the person. Kent Kiehl, the author of the book Psychopath Whisperer, examined a case study in which several rehabilitation efforts were unsuccessful against a pedophile offender. A fascinating aspect of the case study was that further examination of the offender led to the discovery of a brain tumor. Once removed, the offender ceased displaying his initial behaviors. Such knowledge is crucial in answering critical questions in criminal justice. For instance, why do certain people engage in crime? What part of their brain affects their consciousness and empathy? These questions drive my desire to further my studies in psychology.
Strong-willed, I have endured extreme traumatic experiences in my past. Overcoming each experience has developed my resilience and reshaped my attitude towards achieving exemplary grades in school. I have stepped out of my shadow to support myself and craft a better future. Moving forward, I believe I`m capable of handling all challenges that come with joining the university. Based on my strengths, I`m more than capable of handling extreme pressure and multiple tasks. With available resources and a competent faculty, I will achieve more significant strides within the field of psychology.
