Discourse Community with Hip Hop Music

It may sound confusing to you what a discourse community is, but then you will not believe that discourse communities are all around us. They can be clubs, sports, music genre and many more. Perhaps, discourse communities have all it takes to impact an individual’s life either positively or negatively. Presumably, people get into any of these communities based on interests which tend to match their own. In that case, no discourse group membership happens to be accidental “you are either in or you are not”. As far as Hip Hop is concerned, I have been and still a member of a dance group. DNA is the name of the community. The group in particular dances to the moves of Hip Hop beats. DNA embraces all aspects of Hip Hop culture while trying to focus on achieving its goal and all that comes with the musical wave.

While utilizing a great deal of dancing, DNA dance grew is majorly destined to greatness following the trend of the genre in the past couple of years and many more to come. Given every other community is mandated to grow in their respective lines of specialization, likewise to DNA. It is one of the communities trying to promote the culture to reach as many youths as possible in society. As one of the objectives of the group, we want to take the culture to the next level where every living in the 21^st century is identified with Hip Hop. I suppose we have achieved some portion of it.

Besides, DNA is in the struggle to prove to the society that the “drug and gangster” stereotypes placed against the culture are null and void.  In other words, DNA is a dance crew trying to counter some social constructs that have been laid by the society against the uprising American urban youth tradition..

However, DNA is no exception that it is destined to make some financial breakthrough. In that case, my colleagues and I are trying to be the best group with the latest as well as the most trendy dance moves. In that regard, we will be most likely to attract invitations to paying shows among other events. As such, my teammates and I thought of an idea that would get us money over the lazy weekends that always left us bankrupt as a result of extravagancy. We happen to land on the idea of forming this group whose prowess so far is almost beyond the threshold.

Nevertheless, all factors of identity should hold for any community to exist. As Gee puts it “If you don’t fully display an identity associated with a Discourse then you are saying that you do not have that identity: you are then either a pretender or an initiate,” my DNA community is held together by some common characteristics. Ranging from the trendy casual dress code, long hair shaved in varying styles, all the way to urban slang taste of the language, none of us is missing out in any of the aspects. Now that my community is based on dance, particularly Hip Hop moves, all my peers identify with the act. Otherwise, I suppose it would have been something else with a different identity and presumably containing different members.

I subscribe to the urban American English, preferably slang, I grew up with the language. Possibly, that has been the influence of my neighbourhood, along with regular Hip Hop events that were held in the neighbourhood on the weekends and holidays. So then, I am forced to choose friends with similar thoughts and actions as mine. For that matter, all my crew members have the same attitude as mine. Not to forget the beliefs we all have. DNA group is attached mainly by the love of rap music. Rap music is our taste. We feel like making the best out of it through dance because there is already enough rap songs and many more are streaming to the market, but health careit happens that the former is not yet exploited well.

As of the now, Chris Brown’s dancing style speaks to me and the entire crew in all of its forms: verbal, non-verbal, rhythm, and art.  Also, Drake is our role model, his rap songs are truly American creation with vague attributes of other cultures but with evolved influences that have come from within urban America. In particular, we all believe that Hip hop is the discourse of thedowntown core,the young, and the disenfranchised.

In conclusion, DNA has helped me improve my dancing talent while keeping my identity in the same alignment. Apart from embracing the Hip Hop culture through dancing DNA discourse community has expanded my social cycle, especially in matters pertaining to my identity as urban youth. More so, I feel better carrying on the legacies left behind by great legends including Tupac and Biggie, just to mention a few. In that manner of doing things, DNA crew is creating new ideologies and incorporating into that which was started by the legends to ensure that the culture has both traces of the past and the modern society. So then, DNA dance crew is a discourse where we all speak the same Hip Hop language through acting and speaking. I guess so many others would wish to be part of our identity construct but they cannot because, perhaps, they could understand the language, but they may not subscribe to everything the DNA discourse does. So in other words, as stated by Gee “Within each Discourse that a person belongs to, there are common identities, beliefs, and ways of thinking, feeling, and being that are recognizable as both appropriate and defining of membership to other members of the Discourse,” they can form another community operating differently but embraces the same culture.
