Discussion on the topic of torture
Hello Kay Yu,
I want to agree on your discussion on the topic of torture as having been existent for a very long time. It has been in use widely by the government for the purpose of obtaining information from suspects in the most inhuman ways. The police and the military normally choose the method of extracting information from suspects depending on the risk at which they put the society, and normally don’t use torture on every suspect or prisoner. I believe the government has every right to torture anyone who puts other citizens at risk by their unlawful activities, which are often most likely to cost the lives of other citizens as well. I believe that any person who does not want to fall victim of torture by the police or military should ensure that they follow the law and don’t put other people’s lives at stake. The type of torture I condemn is that which is unfairly done to anyone who is innocent
.
Hello Yunhang Jiang
I agree with you that torture has been in use by the government for the longest time possible. At some point, the process was being misused during World War II, which I believe was wrong. Generally, my opinion on torture is that if properly used, it is an efficient technique that helps the government get information from lawbreakers, who are extremely dangerous to society. A good example is jihadists who always have vowed not to tell about their plans in case they get caught. In this instance, it becomes very difficult for the government to handle this type of lawbreakers in a better way if they are uncooperative. The only suggestion that police are left with is the use of forceful means to get information, which is essential to ensure that millions of other citizens will be safe. Everyone has a right to life, but in case it infringes on other people’s right to life, then the government has every right to ensure that they use any means possible to protect those on the right.
