Democracy in the United States

The united states government is a divided form of government that seeks to promote democracy. Democracy is an effort by the laws and policies that seek to preserve the citizen’s liberties. A democracy should have laws and policies that allow people to be free to have their views, their way of life and natural behavior without oppression from the governing bodies. With this understanding, it begs the question of whether America’s democracy is under attack and answer would be yes. I have drawn this conclusion after a closer look at the policies imposed by the president that clearly suppress the liberties of the minorities. (Routledge, 2017,140-190). A key case in point is the executive order 13769, which sought to protect the nation from international terrorists. Executive order 13769, whose title was ‘Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States’ imposed restrictions on Muslims seeking to enter the united states. Citizens from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen had their visas revoked, and are reinstated after having their individual cases reviewed. Enacting this order meant that members of the Muslim society within the united states would receive discrimination in that they would receive extra scrutiny on their travel documents, and because of their religion, they receive treatment suggesting they are potential terrorists. However, other members of society say Christians are more likely preferred to receive direct entry into the united states. Restrictions on travel imposed on individual citizens due to their faith is a clear violation of their liberties. (Routledge, 2017,126-188).

Burn on Immigrants Unable to Afford Healthcare

The president on the 4th of October issued a burn on all immigrants who were unable to prove they can cater for the healthcare they receive within 30 days of entry into the united states. The proclamation argued that by having more immigrants in the country, it meant that the taxpayers would have to cater for the healthcare the immigrants received. Imposing this burden on the healthcare system led to increased taxes, increased premiums and increased medical fees which would cost an extra $7 million annually to individual hospitals to be able offer healthcare. (Routledge, 2017,107-129)

Naturalization

The constitution offers two ways for people to acquire which include through birthright or naturalization. Immigrants automatically can only become citizens through naturalization. Immigrants holding green cards fill form N-400 seeking united states citizenship. Immigrants have their forms reviewed and those eligible to receive citizenship receive the ‘Notice of Action’ which is an appointment letter that invites them to have their biometrics taken which uniquely identify each citizen. (Routledge, 2017,46-98) Biometrics also allow the FBI to perform a background check on the applicants. Immigrants who meet all requirements, are summoned by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services to carry out a citizenship interview and sit an examination. The USCIS then reaches a decision to reward the immigrant citizenship or not. Immigrants awarded citizenship then take an oath of allegiance and receive a certificate of naturalization. (Routledge, 2017,16-59)
