Drugs in Animal Racing
Veterinarians who are employed to work with animal racing have been faced with many challenges. They are in a dilemma on whether to correct the issue of drugs in various sports animals, especially the horses. They tend to be stack between improving and maintaining animal performance or promoting animal welfare and animal health. These animals are expected to support animal performance and maintain animal health. In most cases, the animal is treated for the following reasons. For instance, in a horserace, they maybe are used to improve animal performance, but in various cases, drugs are used to hide an underlying pathology. The latter is where the ethical concern lies. A good example is where a horse is expected to race, and at the same time, it has osteoarthritis. It is a moral issue where the veterinary choose to administer local anesthesia to the joint to improve its performance. Though there are rules set against such an action, many people are stuck between doing it or not
There are regulations and advice from sports governing bodies about hoe veterinary officers should conduct themselves and deal with these dilemmas are set. However, these cases are still presenting in animal sports and racing competitions. They are set to ensure they govern activities governing medications and competition. For instance, the Federation Equestre Internationale (FEI) has published rules and regulations that are effective for all veterinary personnel. There is a divergence of ethical approaches toward various medications that are allowed by multiple bodies’ poses ethical considerations that the drug should not be under the effect of any medication during the race. Veterinary ethical concerns are whether any ailing animal or on any medication should participate in any competition, for example, anti-ulcer drugs such as omeprazole.

Other methods to discourage unethical use of sports animals can be ensuring that doping exercises are set and conducted during various animal sports. Their owners of these animals should be prevented from participating in the specific sports activity, and further disciplinary actions should be taken against them. Other than setting rules, their veterinary bodies should set up campaigns and educational programs to ensure that masses are equipped with knowledge on various rules and regulations set to protect animals. There have been concerns that veterinary that doctors, after treating the animal, are not fully informed on what to do this, leave the athlete to express their autonomous choice. Therefore, veterinary technicians should aid society in providing excellent care and veterinary services for the animals. The practice of veterinary medicine should send their representatives in animal sports to ensure early diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and disease prevention are done to the animals before considering them eligible for participation in animal racing sports. They should also honor their code of working ethics and ensure they report to relevant authorities any cases of breach of animal rights. These will reduce animal abuse in racing industries, thus protecting the animal.
