Effective Study Habits

How much you prepare and how smart you do it goes a long way to determine your success in exams. Nonetheless, students and anybody else preparing for an exam should realize being prepared is not a one-off event. To be prepared means to put together all your attention, knowledge, and skills towards an upcoming task. You do not just wake up one morning and declare your preparedness. It should be a process that is an end to something.

To effectively study, you must be in the right state of mind. Moreover, you should have a positive attitude – a positive mindset can change studying as some form of punishment to a learning prospect.

More importantly, we all have to know that there is not just a one-size-fits-all approach for effective studying. Every student has different abilities and unique ways of learning. What works for one student might not necessarily work for the other. Nonetheless, some general studying tips can go a long way in helping students during their study time.

We sample five of those methods.

  1. Does Approach to Studies Matter?

Again, just as explained in our introductory part, studying requires the right frame of mind. You need to develop that positive attitude. Most of us view studying as an essential task that must be fulfilled. And that is where we all go wrong.

Studying in itself should be an activity we all find joy in. It should be an opportunity to learn and experience a whole new world. You see, the approach you give to a specific situation or matter at hand is just as important as what you eventually do in that situation. Not all the time will you find the urge to study. The mind goes off sometimes, and you have no otherwise but to relax and build the right momentum.

The journey matters more than the goal.

  1. Should you be Concerned about Where you Study?

You really should give a hoot about this. Our environment, to a greater extent, determines our productivity and efficiency. Any place with a lot of disruptions can shift your focus from your books to the activities around you.

Productive study areas should be as calm and decongested as possible. Study areas should be those places you can walk in and get to hear the sound of your eyes blinking. Make sure you settle for a site that is not only quiet but also comfortable in all aspects.

  1. Learn to Practice.

There are numerous ways to do the practice. One way to do it is by testing yourself. Once you are satisfied, you have learned enough; it would be prudent if you put down to paper whatever you have grasped. Is it not true that continuous practice eventually results in perfection? It would be essential to know what you need to rehearse. I would, therefore, recommend psychological hacks for studying to help you with the breakdown of what you need to practice.

Alternatively, you can identify a not so large group of friends to help you go through what you have studied.

  1. Come up with a Program you can follow

One grave mistake you can ever commit is to assume that studying time should be your spare or free time. Just as you have schedules for other programs both at school and at home, so should your studying time. Create some time for your review and studies. In this way, you will save yourself the hassles of cramming terms you have no idea about.

The number of times you study might not be quite substantial. However, what is of essence is the quality and commitment you inject during these studying sessions. At least you won’t have to sweat during any exam period.

And Finally,

  1. Do Take a Break.

Studying, like any other task, is energy consuming and could drain you out. At the end of any study, you may consider taking a rest in between to rest the mind and body. Maybe after completing two chapters in one sitting, consider taking a 20-minute break and find some snacks to help bring back some energy.

As you study, do not forget to Learn

Studying should never be for the sole purpose of passing exams. Instead, studying should help you open your mind and help you learn some things you might not even seem to care about. Apart from the ability to sit for exams, studying should also enable you to grab some valuable experience from your studies.
