effects of cyber-crime on the social media

The advancement of social media has revamped the delimitation of social interplay. Social Media platforms have revolutionized the cyberspace and impacted lives by making the world a global village. Use of World Wide Web has a lot of advantages that have made life trouble-free. However, every single good thing has a downside, and it is advisable to be on your guard about those loopholes. Therefore, this research study will analyze the effects of cyber-crime on the social media.

Research shows that many internet users pay the price after being casualties of cybercrimes. As such, many social media users have had their identities stolen as most of them use their personal information in order to get registered. Thus, these data becomes the easiest target for cyber criminals. To a higher degree many people have had their credit cards used in an unexplainable manner and money withdrawn from their accounts. Therefore, it is prudent to choose which information to share and which not to. Most of these platforms offer options on information you can share.

Furthermore, emergence of cyber violence is on the rise. This is psychological anguish or inciting physical harm against others. People have been victims of stalking and hate speech in the social media platforms.

Unfortunately, by being subjected to this type of violence, many people have closed their accounts and some have gone to the extreme of committing suicide. Therefore it is essential to come up with clear-cut laws which will protect these victims from their aggressors. Changing society behavior and constant monitoring and control of cyber space by regulators is also essential.

Moreover, governments have not been spared by cyber-attacks. Laws that protect the sovereignty, and physical properties’ of a state, have been breached around the world; this include terrorism and espionage. With under-funding of agencies and lack of exceptional talent, states have come up with few mitigation plans, which include; multi-agency groups to tackle this menace. Consequently, training of employees to minimize the mistakes that lead to attacks has been embraced by many government institutions. However, if all else fails, states have the option of Cyber Insurance. It is not cheap to insure thus, governments have to exhaust all available means before falling back to insurance.

In conclusion, cyber-attacks or cyber-crimes can be reduced by being alert while using social media. Personal information should be secured and updated regularly, and it should never be shared with anyone. Also, coming up with stringent laws that protect internet users from bullies is paramount. Finally, governments should invest in employee training, and incorporate a multi-agency task-force to counter cyber-crime.
