Effects of Leadership Style on Project Success: A Case Study of Airport Expressway Abuja
- Study Background
Leadership plays a vital role in any organization by guiding in the creation of the organization s vision, determination, mission, and objectives. Leadership also plays a crucial role in the setting strategies, methods, and policies that are used to achieve the organization’s goals (Hasan E, 2018). Quality leadership is critical to attaining an organization’s mission and vision. Lack of effective leadership in an organization can result in unethical practices, poor performance in terms of finance, and high turnover of labor. Therefore, the main objective of organizations is to attain their set goals; thus, effective leaders are critical in an organization (Vigoda-Gadot, 2012). Unfortunately, most organizations do not take into consideration the leaders adopt. Due to the fact that organizations do not consider the leadership style of the manager, the aim of the research will be to explore the relationship that exists between the leadership style adopted by a manager and the success of the project they are managing. There exist several types of leadership styles, which include: transactional, transformational, democratic, autocratic, and participative leadership styles. The research will mainly concentrate on the more practiced leadership styles globally to develop them further and help the organizations become more successful. The leadership styles include: transactional, charismatic, transformational, autocratic, democratic, and bureaucratic. To achieve the objective of the study, a case study of the Airport Expressway, Abuja, will be used.

- Literature Sources
Project management is described as applying the skills, knowledge, and techniques to the activities of any project to achieve the project’s needs. The sources that the study will rely on include: Tammy Lategan and Stanley Fores, 2015 “The Impact of Leadership Styles on Project Success: Case of Telecommunications company” where the researchers conducted a research on the impacts the leadership styles have on the success of projects. The study gives an overview of the knowledge and information in the corporate environment with the aim of defining leadership styles that make customer service projects successful.
The other literature source is Balint Blaskovics, 2014 “Impact of Leadership Styles on Project Success-The Case of a Multinational Company.” The study’s main objective was the identification of a style of leadership that can maximize the potential of a manager for the success of a project.
Bianca Novo, Eric Landis, and Mary Lewis, 2017 “Leadership and its Role in the Success of Project Management” is the other literature source. The aim of the study was to investigate the correlation that exists between the skills of the leader and project success.
- Pretorius, H.Steyn and T.J Bond, 2018 “Leadership Styles in Projects: Current Trends and Future Opportunities.” The aim of the study was to explore the recent trends in the literature concerning leadership.
Although many pieces of research have been conducted on the relationship between leadership styles and project success, there still exists a gap in the knowledge base of effective leadership in the management of projects.
