Effects of negative affectivity and attitude persuading events on work fulfilment
Hypothesis
Negative affectivity, mood-inducing activities and their interactions
Methodology
The participants were employees of a medium-sized hospital with an average age of 37 years, 45 of them being women and 37 were men (Butcher & Roberson, 1995). Two sessions of mood-inducing events and no mood-inducing events were created, and these individual subjects assigned. On the mood induction session, subjects upon arrival were given cookies, drink and wrapped gift and then given questionnaires to fill. On the session with no induction events, the subjects were given the polls to fill. The research was done for two days which were separated from each other by three weeks to avoid negative feedback from control subjects once they hear of cookies, drinks and an enveloped gift. The adverse attitude was determined by “Tailor Manifest Anxiety Scale” while work fulfilment was established by the Faces Scale.
Major Results
Negative affectivity was found to be associated with negatively occupation fulfilment. Optimistic work fulfilment was high in positive mood-inducing activities compared to the non-mood persuading conditions Adverse attitude and occupation gratification interrelated, and it was found that persons with high negative attitude have higher resilient to optimistic attitude induction activities when compared to lower NA personnel. High NA is more resistant to optimistic attitude induction activities compared to lower ones.
Description of Essential Tables and Figures
The tables indicate that among low NAs there was a significant difference in job satisfaction of 4.71 while among the high NAs the difference is not substantial, 0.5. Among the low NAs the correlation between mood induction activities and undesirable attitudes on work fulfilment, there was a significant of 38, but among the high NAs, there was no significant. Therefore, low NAs contributes to a significant difference in job satisfaction.
Summary of Key Points
Positive mood induction affects positively job satisfaction because it facilitates the retrieval of positive memories. High NA individuals always experience discontent and sorrow because they focus on negatives more than positives. Interaction of NA and mood induction events indicates that persons with higher adverse attitude are resilient to positive attitude persuading activities when compared to individuals with lower negative affectivity. Job satisfaction is higher where there are more induction events than where the games are absent. One’s present mood state indicates an individual’s feelings where judgement is required.
Context
Inducing mood positively to individuals at the workplace affects job satisfaction positively. The affective state is vital at the memory, and it facilitates retrieval of effect congruent memories. The reason behind this is that they are based on more positive and less negative memories than those individuals with no mood induction events. Additionally, one’s present mood where judgement is needed is an indicator of one’s feelings towards the stimuli. High NA individuals usually experience distress and dissatisfaction because of the dwell on their failures and weaknesses. Additionally, they emphasize the adverse side of the situation hence feeling unsatisfied with themselves.
