emerging and current affairs for health leadership and workforce management

Introduction

Organizational culture encompasses an organization’s experiences, values, mission and goals. Corporate culture has been broadened to include leadership and management of these healthcare institutions. The world is currently revolving and undergoing so many changes. Institutions such as the healthcare systems are continually affected by these changes. Healthcare systems are complex constituting the provision of private and public health services, chronic illness and aged care, and primary healthcare. The diverse and changing nature of the world today makes it critical for healthcare providers to respond to these current and emerging issues. It is, therefore, essential to understanding these changes and how they affect leadership concerning health care. This case study examines the emerging and current affairs for health leadership and workforce management at three levels- the international, national, and micro context of individual healthcare leaders.

It is important to note that the emergence of new technologies, including political, social, and economic environments, have created a problem for global health. In response to this, global health has recognized the role of non-state actors to address population needs and drive innovation. One of the most problematic issues in this sector is the role of non-health actors and health actors in the process of healthcare delivery. To understand this, it is critical to understand organizational culture. Organizational culture pertains to what an institution identifies with.

In most cases, it is the driving force of most institutions and the factor influencing success. When the organizational culture of an institution is disrupted, it creates a lot of confusion and disarray. In essence, this is a recipe for failure. It, therefore, becomes imperative for the healthcare institution to familiarize themselves with these changes.

The shortage of human resources in the healthcare industry is an issue that needs to be addressed. It is important to note that this impairs changes and development in the health care sector. This is the reason why policies such as those that encourage non-actors and actors of health care providers are supported. Despite the improvements in this sector, this is still an issue that affects the healthcare industry. It is important to note that shortages also include skill shortages. There are a lot of imbalances in the healthcare sector, which can mainly be attributed to different developmental rates. Different countries have developed differently. For example, the United States of America is one of the most developed countries in the world. This means that their healthcare systems are different. They are more developed and enhanced as compared to other third-world countries. To understand this point, it is critical to assume leadership. The role of a leader is to guide and instruct. However, this is not possible where there is a lack of enough workforce and resources to facilitate this. As such, it becomes hard for leaders to lead effectively. Health care providers find themselves always in this situation. The problem of understaffing has always been an issue facing the healthcare industry. This leads to things such as burnout, which in turn leads to inefficiencies and hampers performance in the institution. This is an issue that affects the healthcare industry currently. It also impacts on leadership.

Globally, the introduction of new technologies has affected healthcare delivery and workforce management. The world is continually experiencing changes. This includes changes in innovation and technology. There is the adoption of new technologies, all aimed at improving service delivery in health care institutions. However, with this comes the increase in financial expenses of both the patients and the institutions. Healthcare institutions are struggling to stay atop and to be recognized at the same time. The pressure falls on the leaders to ensure that there is quality service delivery. However, they have to make careful decisions regarding these new advances. While they may impact the provision of healthcare positively, they may also affect the institution financially. Take, for example, the installation of a new machine worth billions of dollars yet only used by a single person. This leads to massive losses for the institution. While the goal is to improve the quality of healthcare while at the same time impacting the community positively, this is still a business and should be treated as such.  A leadership gap exists in the healthcare industry. It is critical to note that people have different skills and abilities. This is also the case when it comes to leadership. Healthcare providers are expected to make decisions such as which machines to purchase and which person to hire. Some of these people do not have the needed qualifications to pull this off. This affects the institution at large by impacting healthcare. While providing training for these leaders might solve this problem, the cost of such programs is usually unimaginable. Additionally, the programs tailored towards meeting the issues faced by the healthcare industry are not up to date. This, paired with the fact that there is a shortage of healthcare providers all over the world, poses a massive problem for the industry.

Ethical challenges pose a massive problem for healthcare providers nationally. Ethics is a code of conduct that helps guide healthcare providers all over the world. It is important to note that this differs from profession to profession and the levels of the profession. However, these are instructions and should be followed. Health care leaders are supposed to ensure that their employees stick by this code of conduct. However, this is sometimes a challenge. This is especially the case when the leaders and the employees do not agree.

Furthermore, the healthcare industry is short of leaders with the necessary skills to handle such situations.

Additionally, the new rise and development in technology create an issue in this sector. Healthcare leaders at the national level face the problem of regulatory policies. It is important to note that the government enacts policies aimed at ensuring quality service delivery and reduced costs. However, politically, the country experiences challenges with the rise and fall of new leaders. For example, President Donald Trump intended to repeal and replace Obama care and introduce new rules and regulations. Health care leaders have to ensure that they are up to with these changes. This can sometimes be difficult and imposing on this personnel. For example, the introduction of HIPAA has caused a lot of problems for the healthcare industry. The leaders are the people experiencing the real pain of these changes.

Conclusion

The medical industry regularly experiences changes. It is essential to note that these changes affect the delivery of quality healthcare by transforming leadership. Healthcare leaders are responsible for handling and managing these changes. However, with changes at every level, it becomes harder to maintain the workforce. These changes impact the industry, both positively and negatively. Healthcare leaders much more felt this impact. They are responsible for making decisions and managing the workforce. With the problems faced in the leadership sector, such as shortage of personnel with enough skills, this becomes an added burden. These changes require the changing of the organizational culture of this institution. This is difficult and problematic. The healthcare industry should adopt measures to ensure its comfortable and smooth transition into these changes. They should implement policies that help them navigate the continually changing organizational culture.
