Empathy essay
Question 1
Empathy is a feeling that one has in understanding what others are going through in life’s experiences and emotional by considering how one could have felt were they in the same situation. Malibu, the manager at Deco Style design shop, demonstrates empathy in her management, ranging from the handling if suppliers to the handling of customers and in handling the employees. The return policies are one of the agreements with the suppliers in the situation that certain products that they supplied are not bought as expected. She demonstrates empathy by being understanding that the return of items to the suppliers is much of a loss to her and to the supplier. She considers that the reason for the items, for example, dresses no being bought as her wrong judgment in what their clientele would want. Malibu admits that she considers that handling of customers to be difficult because most of them apply for a refund for the clothes. She demonstrates empathy by allowing them to have a full refund even though she knows that the clothing was bought for a specific event. Malibu empathizes too much with her employees by allowing almost all of them to have the day off even in the days that she knows the sales will be more. For instance, during the Victoria Day holiday, she allowed all the part-timers to have the day off and also some of the full-time employees. Question 2
Malibu has demonstrated a positive attitude in her management of the Deco Style women’s store through her actions. She embraces the return policy for the suppliers by accepting that the reason for the goods not being bought is similarly her fault as it is the fault of the manufacturers as they also go at a loss. She is too understanding to her employees such that they can have days off because she considers the impact the other activities in her employees’ schedules would have on the business. The case of Bruce, the associate, is a clear demonstration of a positive attitude because in as much as the absence of Bruce would mean more workload in the workplace, she says that completing a marathon would help boost Bruce’s self-esteem. She makes up for the missing associates, including substituting them with family rather than firing them to have more committed employees. The return of items by customers is another demonstration if positive attitude because she goes along with the demands of the customers as she considers that this would encourage them to visit the shop more. The fact that the owners, Max and Mary, consider her to be too nice is another illustration that she takes everything positively as demonstrated in her management. Tracy asks for a day off to complete her computer science project, despite knowing that the sales would be more during the holidays, but Malibu allows her to take the day off citing that she understands what she is going through comparing it with her days in college.
Question3
Malibu would be more efficient in her playing management role is she becomes less empathic and positive in her decisions. There would be more sales if she had more strict rules on the return of clothing rather than the understanding too much by having just staining of the clothes as the only reason to cancel a return request. The other instance that would benefit more is the handling of suppliers; she cites the instance of giving out clothes as an option of returning the goods to the suppliers. She ought to be uncompromising to return those goods that are no bought as this will ensure that the manufacturers provide better quality and styles that meet the demand in the market. Malibu will gain more in the handling of employees if she becomes less empathic and positive because this would mean that no all the associates can have the day off. For instance, during the Victoria Day, she says that the expectation was to have more sales, therefore, instead of bringing in her mother as a substitute she should have been strict with those that made the request late as this would mean only Kim would be absent. If she became less positive, then the employees would respect her and take turns in taking the day off. The handling of the part-timers is another aspect of management that requires less empathy hence the rescheduling of working hours would be made less often, and there would be firing off the underperforming employees. The tough management approach would mean the satisfaction of Mary and Max, the owners, who considered her management to be too nice despite the experience she has had in the women’s stores in the past.
