enhancing the education of the nurses by teaching them the needs of veterans when it comes to mental health
The world health organization states that nurses are essential providers of treatment and care since they are the largest group of professionals that offer mental health care in both primary and specialist health amenities (“WHO | Developing Nursing Resources for Mental Health”, 2020). But, the problem is that in a majority of the nations, the psychiatric education of nurses is inadequate, meaning that this limits their role when it comes to offering mental health care. Therefore, this research contributes to enhancing the education of the nurses by teaching them the needs of veterans when it comes to mental health and what they can do to prevent and treat the various mental illnesses (“WHO | Developing Nursing Resources for Mental Health”, 2020). The research is also a foundation for future research that will help the nurses augment the information that they have about the mental health of veterans.
Mental health is a significant health issue among veterans, and more has to be done to make sure all the veterans access mental health services affordably (Hester, 2017). For instance, the programs that help veterans transition to regular life need to make sure that all the veterans get mental health services even if they do not show any signs of mental health issues. Additionally, more research has to be done on the treatments that best for the veterans since a significant number of veterans who use the current mental health services do not recover. Similarly, both private physicians and the government need to enhance outreach to the veterans in need and create more public awareness of the resources available to veterans (Hester, 2017). Currently, there are very few organizations that the veterans can rely on for mental health services despite them need care that is consistent, predictable, accessible, and high-quality when they require it. Further, despite veterans being resilient, they are not superhuman, and they experience stressful situations like other civilians. Thus, to improve care for veterans, we need to treat them as human beings who need our help as a society.
