Environmental care

Include at least three points for each question.

  1. What is the central environmental conflict in this video? What is the setting (time and place) of the issue?
  • Pollution is a crucial ecological conflict in the video. Pollution has changed and made the environment unconducive, and it tracks down the pollution cycle. The pollution cycle starts from human in the industrialization section. Goes to the aquatic animal life, causing significant concerns for sea animals and end up to the human being and loss of sea animals.
  • The conflict occurs as from the 1960s onwards and the key places include

– The Chesapeake Bay, where over the year many people depended on fish as a source of income, but due to increased pollution from industrial and farming activities, contamination poisoned the water leading to the death of many aquatic animals like oyster, crabs, and fish.

– The Southern park hosts mostly immigrants working in the industries, and a lot of PBC is released to the environment. The soil soaks the PCB and ends up in water bodies risking the survival of aquatic life animals. The animals die while others mutate, as for the residents, they worry because their lives are put under high risk of cancer.

– The Tyson Corner experiences significant development, but the developments cause’ environmental change and cause an increase in air pollution as the rate of car purchases is high.

  1. Name and describe the interest of stakeholder groups (these are groups of people representing all interests in the issue: those who themselves may be harmed or may benefit, or groups who represent other living things).
  • The general public is aware of the increased environmental pollution, which contributes to high health concerns due to chronic diseases increase the people of Southern park who worry of high PCB content in water and PCB is a known carcinogenic. The public is concerned about their safety.
  • The fishermen’s source of income and livelihood is fishing, but through severe water pollution, the population of aquatic animals has reduced. Some animals face extinction like the oyster. Before the pollution, the fishermen could catch a large number of safe fish, but with the pollution, the number of the fish reduced, and the available ones are not safe for consumption as some breed have mutated and are disease carriers.
  • Researchers are concerned with the quest to find out the results of the high level of pollution. For example, the researchers found that whales are affected mainly by pollution. The researchers are aware of the cons of pollution, which contributed to the mutation and death of sea animals.
  • The government, through the EPA, is interested in the issue to ensure that sanity and environmental protection. The key interest of EPA is to enforce laws that will contribute to environmental pollution and prosecute pollutants like Boeing.
  • Industrial and agricultural organizations played a major role in water and environmental pollution. For a long time, they practiced irresponsible disposal of their wastes, which causes pollution. Like the chicken farms whose disposal of chicken wastes increasing nitrogen. Continued pollution harms organizations” public reputation and should ensure they practice corporate social responsibility.

  1. What actions were taken or proposed to resolve the issue, and what were the actual or expected consequences of those actions? How effective was (or would be) each action in dealing with the central conflict?

Action taken

  • The government built treatment plants to ensure that wastes released are treated before reaching the water bodies through biological nutrients removal. An example is a water and waste treatment plant in the Housatonic River.
  • The government of Kings County also prohibited the area residents from clearing their land beyond the set percentage of 65%. The county also went ahead to purchase are with forest and water base so that no constructions were put up.
  • The government also introduced voluntary compliance where they advocated for individual responsibilities to ensure that pollution did not persist. In an
  • Residents of Seattle decided to engage in mass clearing and cleaning exercises to make the environment better.
  • Introduction of smart planning to minimize environmental disturbance in states like Washington.

Expected and actual consequences

  • The significant expectation of the proposed action was reduced pollution and making the environment safe.
  • The strictness in the upholding the environmental conservation contributed to legal battles like in the case of Boeing and Seattle. The administration exposed Boeing in issue concerning PCB, which is carcinogenic.
  • The actions aimed at making every stakeholder responsible for the productions for their products. For example, the chicken firms were not responsible for the disposal of the chicken wastes.
  • Introduction of smart growth aimed at decongesting the state and ensure that the environment was smarty used.

Effectiveness of actions

  • The public knew that they had to solve the issues first because they affected directly by the effects of pollution, and they adapted personal environment conservation and mobilized each other to take part in clearing exercises.
  • Strictness by EPA could lead to environmental compliance.
  • Researchers raising concerns about the consequences of increased pollution could lead to practices that uphold environmental conservation and discover ways to ensure that the threat caused by pollution like the extinction of whales is mitigated.
  • No firms would like to like to enter into legal battle like Boeing, so the actions would lead to corporate social responsibilities by firms.
  • Some firms like Perdue started recycling the recycling plant of their manure to ensure that nitrogen wastes in water were reduced.

  1. What other approaches or solutions do you think might have been more effective or still might be done to improve the situation? Do you think this situation can be resolved?

Environmental care is a collective responsibility of different parties and to ensure that the goal the following approaches could help solving the issues;

  • Heavy fines and Cancellation of licenses of organizations emitting their wastes to the water bodies.
  • Public awareness continued efforts to ensure that all stakeholders are aware of the best practices.
  • Empowering EPA to ensure that it performs its responsibilities effectively.
  • Building of more treatment plants to ensure that no raw wastes get to the water.

Water and environmental preservation currently are not issued that can be resolved quickly as the federal government is encouraging and advocating for the creation of local industries and infrastructure. Such actions contribute to pollution, and solving the issue will be feasible when the above measures are regarded. The only way the problem can be resolved is the reduction of pollution and not complete conservation.
