Estranged Relationships with Parents and Their Effects

The estranged relationship among family members or between parents and their children can be defined as a phenomenon or a situation where members of a family no longer want to be associated with the other or do not want to have any relationship with them (Fingerman, 2017). An estranged relationship between children and their parents in today’s world has risen to high rates, which are contributed to by the culture change, technology, and lifestyle change in society. The relationship between a parent and the children I always expected to be a lifelong bond, but with time as the children grow old, they start putting up boundaries between them and their parents, which leads to estrangement.  Estrangement has some negative physiological, relation, and psychological effects on the involved parties.

When Researching this topic, it is essential to involve ethical practice to ensure that the research results insufficient and sufficient findings that can be used to come up with solutions on how to handle the issue. The ethical issues that can affect the methodologies used are in the research are factors such as biasness, lack of honesty and integrity, and respect for intellectual property (Miller, 2012). The upholding ethics in research promotes the main aim of the study, enables the collaboration of the parties involved, and they ensure that the researcher can be held accountable for every action.

One of the ethical issues that affected my research on the estranged relationship and its effects is the issue of honesty and integrity. Some of the participants that made up the sample I used on the investigation were not honest with their responses as most of them feared being criticized or ridiculed (Kimmel, 2007). The fear contributed to them being dishonest and did not follow the agreement we had on sincerity. Since most of the participants were minors, according to the law, it demands that in a situation where a minor is being interviewed, the parent should be present. The factor of parents being present during the interviews led to the respondents to hold back information. This issue of honesty and integrity can be minimized by ensuring that the agreement of sincerity is followed, and you make the respondent comfortable to ensure they offer the best responses to your questions.

The second ethical issue that affected my research question and methodology was the issue of biasness (Yip et al., (2016). Since I had some experience of the estranged relationship with my parents when I was a teenager, it affected my research process. It resulted in my deviation from other issues that the respondents raised that I did not feel like it was true. The unintended biasness in my research affected my results since I felt like the response did not relate to my experience. The biasness and lack of objectivity affected my research as it led to dishonesty and omission of some information in my results that I did not feel like it was correct according to my opinion. To minimize the issue of biasness, it is essential to be objective in every step in the research and avoid personal views from affecting the results of the study.

Finally is the issue of respect for the intellectual property when using the other scholars’ work without recognizing them. Plagiarism has been an issue in my research and when using a case study review methodology (Yip et al., 2016). The plagiarism issues occurred as a result of not attaining permission from the original author of the materials i used for information. The effect of not respecting the copyright and patent principles affected the integrity of my research. The problem of plagiarism in the study can be eliminated by ensuring that the patent, copyright, and acknowledgment laws are followed in every study that is being carried out by reviewing other people’s work.

Ethical issues are important factors to be put into consideration in every research that one is conducting to ensure that the results of the study can be used to come up with accurate solutions. It is essential to use methods that will not affect the integrity of your research and the process of finding out solutions on a specific topic. But it is also important to note that some ethical issues affect the research unintentionally.  It is essential to ensure that a research methodology that one minimizes or eliminates the ethical issues that might hamper the research.
