ETHICS AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Assessment.
The assessment shows that I tend to strike a balance between performance, social responsibility, and ethics. I agree with the results.
Most organizations gear towards maximizing profits and focusing less on ethics and social responsibilities. This might harm the organization as compared to a positive one example is the case of Junior Guzman-Feliz, a fifteen-year-old boy who was attacked in the Bronx. He ran to a nearby bodega for help, but the owner refused to help and chased him in fear. The owner was partially afraid of attracting the gunmen and also scaring the customers because of the bleeding boy. The bodega was shut down a week later because the public held the owner accountable for refusing to help the dying boy.
Organizations ignore their ethical and social responsibilities and tend to focus on making money. The existence of social media has, however, changed the priorities of some organizations. This is because a slight mistake might profoundly impact the organization, as seen in the case of Junior Guzman-Feliz. One negative tweet trend can lead to significant downfall. Another example is the cancellation of the 2019 Victoria’s Secret fashion show. Most people currently advocate for inclusiveness in the fashion world. Victoria’s Secret fashion has continuously been accused of choosing slender models. The 2019 Fenty Show included models of all sizes, color, and gender. People on social media speculated that this resulted in the cancellation of Victoria’s Secret show.
From the discussion above, we can conclude that organizations need to focus on their social responsibility and ethics because ignorance might negatively impact the organization.
Connection.
An organization’s social responsibility varies from how employers treat their employees, how customers are treated, and the staff treats each other. All of these scenarios lead to negative or positive outcomes.
Organizations have a social responsibility beyond making profit. They are also responsible for being good citizens because it improves efficiency among employees and leads to customer attraction. Social responsibility includes giving back to society. This can be done through hosting charity events, planning a day for all employees to visit the homeless and participating in fundraisers. Involvement in such activities leads to admiration by the public, which might attract potential customers.(Section 2-5d).
Some organizations tend to bend or break the rules to make profit. An example is a scenario whereby a law firm represents conflicting clients. This benefits the organization but might have negative repercussions in the long run.
Organizations might perform unethical operations that are within the confines of the law. An example is given in this Chapter- The Changing Environment of Organizations-where, the company intends to expand. The expansion has a positive impact; it offers employment opportunities for the local community. However, there are negative consequences, that is, the release of pollutants to the local streams and air. With the increment of environmental conservation movements, the company might end up suffering in the long run.
Social responsibilities must be balanced with interests to maintain the efficiency and smooth running of a company.
