Ethics when employing Music/ Sound to for newborns’ development

What is Medical Humanities?

Medical humanities (MH) is an interdisciplinary between humanities and science having qualities and aspects of both. According to Klugman (2017), “Medical Humanities is an interdisciplinary that is concerned with understanding the human condition of health and illness to create knowledge and sensitive health care providers, patients, and family caregivers”. Besides, medical humanities conceptualize “the creative and intellectual strengths of diverse discipline including creative writing, drama, art, music, philosophy and history in pursuit of medical, educational goals”(Kirklin, 2003). Considering the increasing technological advancements and increased productivity pressures, a question of whether we can maintain the required balance of caring and humanistic care arises. A problem arises of determining if health practitioners are in a position to deal with patients’ needs and if their education seeks to prepare their minds and hearts for this.

Changes in technological advances in medicine as defined by Mann (2017), is anchored within the humanities and they include developing empathy and resilience, creating closer connections with patients, and ensuring long lasting joy and understanding the meaning in medicine. Moreover, medical humanities contribute significantly into developing qualities like self-awareness, self-reflection, professionalism and communication skills. Medical humanities as a field in medical education create ideality and optimization of the wellbeing of the patient and the caregiver..

Music and sound help in newborn development

Music is an essential tool in children development of senses not limited to communication, emotions, language and social wellbeing starting pre-birth. Newborns have the potential to understand musical intervals, beats and chords that they are within their environment. Furthermore, as time progresses, these kids develop an understanding of intricate harmonies and syntax in music. Music design is a part of human behaviour that develops before birth during the final stages of pregnancy. Newborns come into the world having experienced sounds surrounding maternal environment and culture and can identify the voiced sounds. Newborns develop language that vis mediated according to musical aspects that relate to speech. Therefore, music enables the development of linguistics. Parents and caregivers engage in progressive music with their babies, and this significantly contributes to building deeper relationships.

According to Henriksson et al. (2015), music education fades from everyday use, and most people think music is for specific people. Most parents and caregivers are stressed up trying to comfort their children. Music helps newborns manage or develop control over their emotions. Listening to music can engage a calm child. For a child to develop physically, actively engaging them in music is a critical consideration. Developing quality educational music for toddlers has significantly contributed to children development. Also, exposing the children to various musical concepts often enhances babies development (Wald, 2018).

Approaches to ethics in pediatric and development application fields

Children are vulnerable in society, and therefore, it is a scientific, social and emotional responsibility for protecting their health. Children are exposed to environmental risks, chemical toxins and vulnerability of social evils than adults.  Ethical considerations for children and their environmental health are critical aspects.  It is vital to put into account ways in which ethical issues are solved. Researches have been conducted and developed recent approaches to ethical considerations for newborns. Biobanks collect, analyze and store data samples collected on environmental studies on health for children. These biobanks are government-owned and follow up programs that give information about the children wellbeing.

Another ethical consideration is incorporating environmental and health concerns for children in the guidelines for legal ethics. Children are vulnerable and thus treating them with respect, consenting children and parental care, allowing enough time to children and parents to bond and discuss issues and ensuring all children rights are followed to the later. These environments will not only provide children growth but also creates an environment for them to unleash their potential.

Ethical considerations for sound and music in the clinical environment

A clinical environment for newborns is usually noisy and busy filled with anxiety of both the parents and children. This mood of pain makes treatments to be more complicated. Creating a lesser tensed and anxious environment can minimize the pain by capturing most children’s senses and stimulating them to the clinic environment. The use of music when administering healthcare enables children to verbalize their pain and distress and design a strategy for coping up. Music, as often used, alters the child’s perception of the pain through incorporating elements of musical education and its development is the overall experience.

Musical nature and its soothing effect in humans is what symbioses between the children pain and shares a different experience of comfort and relief. Studies have shown that increased use of music in newborns clinics has the effect of reducing post-operation pain and relieves the mind. It can also correct stammering and contribute towards restoring speech. When deaf children interact with music, eye contact relationship builds. Therefore music is a safe, ethical consideration in clinical environments that is beneficial for pain and anxiety management. Children exposed to music are more efficient. Music also relieves the parents accompanying their newborns to the clinics and reduces the pain and anxiety. Therefore music plays a crucial role in clinical environments (Micallef, 2015).
