Even before Barnier’s announcement, the second round of negotiations on the post-Brexit trade agreement that was due to take place in London this week had been canceled because of the pandemic. Both sides said they were looking for alternative ways to continue negotiating, including by videoconference.
Although the United Kingdom left the European Union on 31 January, it remains at the same rates until the end of this year. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he wants a comprehensive deal later this year.
