explore a career that interests you in the graphic communications industry
OBJECTIVE: You will explore a career that interests you in the graphic communications industry and conduct primary and secondary research to learn more about the role. This assignment is designed to build important industry connections that will be invaluable throughout your undergraduate degree and beyond. You may choose to complete this assignment either individually OR in teams of two.
You will identify a position of interest within the graphic communications industry, find someone who is currently in this role, and conduct an in-person interview with them. Specifically, you are expected to use at least one primary research source (the interview), at least three reputable (scholarly and/or non-scholarly) secondary sources in your research, and use correct APA reference formatting throughout the report. Your final report (1000 – 1200 words) should be about the CAREER and not just the person you’ve interviewed. They will have one perspective on the career, however you’re conducting secondary research to learn about others’ perspectives, too.[unique_solution]
Below is a list of some of the careers you may wish to look into, however you do not have to choose a career on this list as long as it is a career in the printing industry. When you meet in-person with your contact, it’s recommended that you record the 15-30 minute interview (always obtain permission BEFORE you start recording) so that you can focus on the conversation in the moment and listen to the details later. Although this assignment is not due until week 7 of this course, it is CRITICAL that you create internal milestones for yourself throughout the semester. You should aim to contact your interviewee no later than week 3 of the semester and the interview should be completed no later than Reading Week (preferably sooner). If you are completing this assignment in a team of two, BOTH of you must be present at the interview.
NOTE: Please be considerate of the fact that your interviewee is doing you a big favour by taking the time to meet with you and answer your questions. Therefore, please make the process as easy as possible for your interviewee by providing them with lots of lead time, as well as offering to travel to their office to conduct the interview. Please dress appropriately for a business meeting and arrive AT LEAST 10 minutes early.
