This factor or element is what Loren sees as tremendous and unique magic about life and mainly water.

Analysis

Mostly, in the essay, Loren recounts his experience while in one of his many adventures. Significantly, what he refers to as magic is the unique ability by water to change the state of things. For instance, he finds a fish that is stuck in an ice glacier. First of all, there is little oxygen in the ice as he says which a scientific fact is. So when he removes the fish from the ice, he expects to eat it later. However, on putting it in the water, the ice melts from the fish’s body. Then he notices that the fish is alive.

Significantly, this is not the only thing he discovers in this part of the essay. He finds out slightly before this experience that the roots also stretch themselves to reach out to the river. And so does every other creature in the water. This fact he says is one that plants in the desert may tell well.

In essence, this experience by Loren goes deeper than one may see. For instance, once the water comes into contact with the fish, the ice melts. In essence, water can unshackle this fish from what keeps it away from the most crucial element, which is oxygen. However, for the fish, there is no oxygen without water. Hence, this point explains that despite the glacier having oxygen trapped in it, the ice may not give life to the fish.

In essence, even the oxygen itself is trapped and is useless to the fish without the magical touch of water. That is the reason that the water melts the ice, saving not only the fish but also setting the oxygen in the ice, free. This magic, as Loren sees it is what makes the water in that river free while flowing down the glacier, along the stream, and even in the desert where it is highly unlikely that life would exist.

By describing his amusement at how the roots reach out towards the water and how the algae settle where the water is, he indicates the essence of water. Water is not only life-giving in the sense of resurrecting the fish. Its presence alone is attractive and compelling. That is why the roots are attracted to the water. By extension, there is life in water, and that is why once he enters the water, he feels as though he is in the sea bed. That is the magic that he experiences.

It is significant to notice that once the fish is alive, Loren puts in in a tank of water. In essence, whether flowing or not, the water is just as sufficient. There is a touch of life in whatever volume of water. Therefore, even a drop of water is magical. Further, Loren being in the water is a sign of the magic he explains. This fact is because he is afraid of being in the water, but still, he finds himself in it.

Arguably, there is an imagination of the water, compelling him to step inside. Despite being afraid of the water, Loren can save the fish unknowingly. It is as if some force inside the water directs him on what to do. He is not aware of his actions, but instead, he finds himself doing things.

My discovery.

Significantly, while swimming inside a pool, I realized that the surface of the pool appeared very close despite the depth. Both the shallow and deep surfaces to me seemed not to be very distant. However, on diving into the pool, I felt the constant bottom as I sank to the surface, which was two meters under.

On the other hand, while looking at my leg from outside, I discovered that it appeared bent and more significant than it is. All other objects, including my hand, changed in shape and size from inside the clear water. This occurrence is, of course, scientific as it is a result of the refraction of light. However, this unique aspect is indicative of the magic that is in water.

Mostly, this magic is seen in the water’s ability to bend objects, while in the real sense, they are not bent. Once the objects are immersed in the water, it appears as if they enter a different world. The water surface is a different world altogether that seems close, yet it is further away than one may imagine. Additionally, just like in Eiseley’s case, water can change the form of the objects inside it. It bends nature by creating an illusion that things are different inside it.

In conclusion, from Eiseley’s view, water is magical. Loren manages to prove this by describing his encounter with a fish. Even though the fish appears dead while stuck in the ice, water returns life in it. This encounter is a clear indication that water can change a situation, whether for a plant or a creature like fish. It is also magical that water communicates with Loren. The aspect of refraction, on the other hand, shows how magical water is.
