Favorite movie or book
As we have composed the last two essays, you have seen and heard the term ′thesis statement′ quite a bit. This week for your discussion, I want you to tell us your favorite movie or book (including any needed background info necessary, a short summary) – then tell us that movie/book′s thesis statement. Don′t confuse a thesis with a theme/message… remember that the thesis acts as a summary for your whole paper, so a movie or book′s thesis would sum the entire thing up in 1-2 sentences. (4 sentences minimum) Next tell us how you chose to narrow down your movie/book. How did you decide what to include and what to leave out? Could your thesis describe any other movie/book, or is it unique? How else might you decide what to include in the thesis statement for your movie/book? (4 sentences minimum) [unique_solution]Here′s an example: My favorite move is A Few Good Men which was written by Aaron Sorkin as a stage play, and made in to a movie in 1993. Summary: Lt. Kaffee (Tom Cruise) is a military lawyer who is assigned to defend two U.S. Marines charged with the murder of a fellow officer. A fellow lawyer, Lt. Cdr. Galloway convinces him that the accused were most likely carrying out an order from their commanding officer. Kaffee risks his career by accusing Col. Nathan R. Jessep of giving the order on the stand in an effort to uncover the conspiracy; Jessep admits the crime, and Kaffee wins the case. Thesis: We are capable of more than we know; your history does not determine your future. Rationale: I had trouble deciding how to pick the thesis for this film, because there are a lot of side plots and characters that are all very important. When choosing the thesis, I focused on the main information, and excluded all side-plots and extra characters. The thesis could be used in other movies, because it′s a common theme (fighting destiny, choosing your own path) for many movies.
