Introduction

Racial discrimination has been the story of the day, and day by day, the roots are getting deeper. The newest generation is inheriting it from the founding fathers, and it is now spreading at an alarming rate. The racial act is being evident in several ways. Just because of their color, some will face law harshly; others have their rights denied and isolation. Racial discrimination, according to Morrison’s story, is common in workplaces, schools, and access to social services from the government. For one to access justice, which is evidenced by two movies, that is; the hate u give’ and ‘Just Mercy,’ sum it all.

Comparing.

The movie Hate U give, a film directed by George Tillman Jr, is all a package full of several themes. It involves diversities of classes of people, living at different levels of life. The film explores the theme of racial discrimination, which bring about a group of antagonists between whites and black. Starr Carter is a daughter to a ‘poor’ black man who struggles day in, day out to meet daily needs. Series of events take place, which makes it difficult for blacks to survive in a singular dominated society of whites. Starr Carter is involved in several instances which makes us feel like being a black is a sin.

Maverick, Starr’s father, ensures he works the best to provide her daughter with the best education at William Prep school. In one of the fine weekends, Starr and her friends attend a party, which does rather end in cries over joy. The police break up, and Khalil offers to drive Starr home. While the two were driving home, the cops halts them and ask Khalil to get out of the car. As Khalil move towards Starr to look at her, the police officer fires three bullets on Khalil and kill him. Bearing in mind, Khalil is African-American, and the rate at which blacks are facing discrimination is high. The killing of Khalil couples Starr with several challenges. Starr fights to hide her identity for her safety, her uncle Carlos, who is also a detective, advise her to accept the interview with the police.

Another film of interest which focuses on the theme ‘black lives matter’ is the movie ‘just mercy’. Destin Daniel Cretton directs the movie. The movie, based on the story of the man Walter McMillan. His case revolves around his murder conviction, which is appealed by the young defense general Bryan Stevenson. It is a sequence of events which are antagonistic to each other. For instance, Walter is black-American and gets convicted of killing a white woman, Ronda Morrison, an event that takes the case to the bases of racism.

In the first place, the court hearing gets adjourned on Walter’s case, which brings about conflict of interest in court. When Stevenson ask the prosecutor for aid, the court chairperson dismisses his request. The action shows how courts are not in favor to hear the cases involving blacks. He mainly came to Alabama to help fight for poor people who are not able to afford someone to represent them in the court of law. This being his driving principle, his struggle does not end up there after his request gets dismissed.

His tactics proceeded when he tried convincing Darnell Houston to testify that he witnessed and collaborated Myer’s felony, at the day he committed murder. Events turn over took place as when Stevenson presented the testimony since it was contradictory. We realize how possession of strong melanin is an extreme sport in whites dominated areas. Walter gets convicted of killing the white woman. Myer is forced to give false witness on the death case which had befell Walter. Myer confesses that the police threatened to execute him by electric chair. Stevenson has another witness, Houston, who has the real version of the story that could save Walter and get him out of the cell.

There being another witness, Stevenson appeals to a local court and asks Myer if he can recant his witness afresh. Stevenson requests for the retrial to have the case anew and new witnesses giving evidence that Walter was wrongly convicted. Judges refuse Stevenson’s request of having the case in court again. But there is light at the end of the tunnel when Supreme Court of Alabama grants McMillan’s case a retrial. Sequence of events occurs where Stevenson convinces Chapman to join him, which he agrees. The charges against Walter dropped, and he is reunited with his family again.

If we look at the two films closely, they possess similar characteristics. For the case of the film ‘the hate u give’, we see police distracting the party that had many participants as blacks. When Khalil and Star are driving, and on their way home, white police stop them and kill Khalil without any apparent reason. The cops harassed Khalil, and they did not take his time before taking the life of the innocent boy. The police confused the hand brush Khalil grabbed for defense for a gun, and the police thus killed him. The news about the killing of Khalil spread all over the country and now a national matter. The boy died for wrongs he did not do. If he was on the wrong side of the law, probably, the government could have used the necessary procedures to have him aligned in the court of law.

Looking onto the movie ‘just mercy’, we understand the Walter McMillan was black and was wrongly convicted of the death of Ronda Morrison. The arrest and imprisoning him without evidence is proof that justice is limited access to the less fortunate. In addition to this, the court tries to confide with the sins of ‘well-of’ in society. The evident part of this is apparent when the local court denies Stevenson a chance to have Walter’s case to have a retrial.

Contrast.

The two movies, irrespective of having similarity I the theme of advocacy for black excellence, some cases are different. Coincidental circumstances are evident, and the first one occurs when Khalil, an African-American kid, is killed without facing the law. Supposedly, the police assumed Khalil is intoxicated, and that is why he refused to roll down the window and turn off the music. Technically, we can assume that the boy is intoxicated and feared facing the police. The police couldn’t have killed him, but rather, take the necessary law measures. The suspect for the case of Khalil is known since Starr saw him and she was convinced by Carlos to be the witness.

For the movie ‘just mercy’, the contrast present is that even when it demands most, those that are faced harsh law are not granted their rights. Walter is jailed, and his lawyer seeks retrial, which is adamantly denied by the judges. They might be knowing the cause of Ronda Morrison’s death and tries to hide it. For this case, the person responsible for the death of the victim is not known. The later realize that Walter is not responsible for the death; he is set free and reunited with his family.
