Film Editing Techniques in the Pulp Fiction (1994)
Pulp Fiction movie editor, Sally Menke utilize various editing techniques to provide one of the best Hollywood films. In the introduction, continuity editing is used to create an action that occurs chronologically. Mullen (245) noted that continuity editing provides smooth flow across shots and scenes in the film without jarring the visual inconsistencies. This creates a sense of story at the beginning of the viewers. Another editing technique Sally Menke applies is linear editing, where the movie scenes are kept in the order of beginning, middle, and end. This helps to keep the criminal stories in order hence easy to follow. The style of non-continuity is also applied in some scenes. In the last scene, when Bruce disappears from the chopper to get his wings with his girlfriend, shots are a mismatch in to interfere with the impression of space and time. The use of flashbacks in the movie also emphasizes on the non-continuity editing technique when the film goes back in time then the tint is applied to make the shots faster and quicker. Non-continuity scenes draw viewers’ attention to the end of the film.
Editing techniques used in pulp fiction helps in many ways. First, Sally Menke uses the editing methods to put all the shots in chronological order and a sequence that is easily understandable and quick to follow. Sally Menke manages to present the pulp fiction as a whole comprehensive unit that is exciting and educating by the use of editing techniques. Given the nature of Quentin Tarantino’s criminal’s story, non-continuity, continuity, linear, and non-linear editing techniques were appropriate and fit to present the intended message.
Camera Movement Techniques in the Wrestler (2008)
After watching the movie the wrestler, it is right to say that the film cinematographer Maryse Alberti made the film real. In the film, Maryse uses cameras skillful to play a part in the art of visual storytelling. The cameras are skilfully operated with proper lighting in every scene. The camera movements control what viewers can see and how the images are shown. Maryse chose the right shooting methods to contribute to telling the wrestlers story visually.
The most used cinematography technique is an extreme long shot that captured a broad area to present the scale of subjects in connection to their environment. For example, towards the end of the film, as Romeo Roselli walks in the forest, the camera captures his relation to other environmental players such as birds in the woods. Long short is also used, which enables viewers to have a clear view of scenes. In this case, subjects are closer to the camera, but their whole body is not in the view (Aronofsky, 133). Maryse uses medium short of creating emotional scenes when showing the wrestler down on his knees in the fighting ring. Medium shots and medium close up shots can be observed in the film to allow the audience to move a lot more closely. A combination of the two techniques provides informative scenes. Other camera movement techniques used are an extreme close up and Dutch angle shot. The wrestler’s cinematographer, Maryse, was a skilled camera operator, and her work in the film makes it look far much better than other films of the kind. Camera movements in the movie help the narrator to tell the real-life story of the wrestler.
