Final Project – Unjust Research Paper – Use of “Appropriate” Police Force

Introduction

Since in history, the use of police force has remained to be a controversial issue in America. Evidence from multiple literature piece shows that excessive use of police force could primarily jeopardize the entire police department and its overall relationship with the US contemporary society. Although the historical perspective shows instances that instances of police brutality have been declining since the 1960s, these cases have remained to be persistent in modern society. For example, the shooting of black American teenager Michael brown back in 2014 justifies that there is still misuse of the police force, particularly on people color in the united states. In this context, evidence from multiple literature pieces shows the constant evolution of nationwide protests has triggered police officers in America to misuse the power vested on them while administering justice to the members of the public. Surprisingly, officers who are found indulging themselves in such actions have never been evicted guilty or even charged guilty of their actions. As a consequence, the situation mentioned above has introduced the notion that police officers are never held liable for their adverse actions, and this has, in turn, inspired the creation of black live matters movement in the country.  Therefore, with this background information regarding the subject matter, this paper has been set to discuss in detail the use of “Appropriate” Police Force as a criminal injustice scenario mainly to the black and other immigrants living in America.

Section Outlining My Topic and Why It Could Be Considered an Injustice

The anticipation of police brutality is significant following the long history of police injustice in the united states of America (Walker, & Archbold, 2018). Most importantly, the use of police force has gone contrary to the norms and regulations circumnavigating human welfare. It is significant to acknowledge that misuse of the police force is a global issue since most of the current generation is literate enough to anticipate the application of their rights. Currently, the diversity in the forms of abuse utilized by the police in the United States of America presents the relevance of looking into the matter with great focus. Such applications include but not limited to murder, torture, mayhem, assault, and battery (González, 2019). The brutality in the policing section of the united states administration has been linked to discrimination. Most significantly, police in the united states have discriminated against the poor and frustrated working-class whites in the 19th and 20th centuries (Kappeler & Schaefer, 2018). The immigrants from Europe have also heavily complained about the frustration of their communities by the police. In the early 1920s, most police departments in the urban sections of the country, like Chicago and New York City, utilized extralegal tactics against the communities of the Italian immigrants in the efforts of a crackdown on organized crimes. This norm creates a sense of direct correlation between the ancient regime and the current regime concerning the inappropriate administration of power among the American police. The government is playing a small role in ensuring the police adhere to the implementation of human rights and dignity. It is currently difficult to differentiate the actions of the ancient regime to the current administration. Therefore, it is first to raise the alarm regarding the issue to set up new strategies for promoting compliance and accountability.

From a sociological perspective, evidence shows that black Americans and Latinos are profoundly affected by the underlying issue of the use of excessive force by police officers in the nation.  For instance, (González 2019) reveals that police brutality has ever been resulting in the killings of Latinos and African Americans in the country, a situation that predisposed increased rates of mental health problems to the minorities in America.  The statistics show that these instances have profoundly affected the social lives of the minority groups in the country since when one member of a family is brutally treated or killed by police officers, the rest of the family members remain psychologically affected. Therefore, one can conclude that misuse of power vested on police officers causes disruptions of social patterns and lives of minorities in the nation, including the African Americans and Latinos.

How This Issue Is Related to Today’s Criminal Justice System in America

There is a close relationship between the “appropriate use” of police forces and the entire criminal justice system of America. Such is because the police unit is always held under the criminal justice system, and therefore, its inefficiency leads to the poor performance of the correctional system as a whole.  For example, after the murder of black American Michael brown by a brutal police officer, debates were centered on inequalities in the basic functioning of the entire criminal justice. Thus, this shows that any deviation from the regular operation of a smaller unit of criminal justice leads to the creation of a correctional system that has no trust in the broader of the community.

Inappropriate use of police force, particularly on African Americans, Latinos, and other minorities, will implant a perception that the entire criminal justice of America is racist. According to the underlying literature, it is evident that the misuse of police power and other criminal justice functions has led to the development of whelming evidence and perception that the entire system is racist. For example, Sen. Tim Scott delivered a persuasive speech explaining how the US police officers pulled him out of his car just after suspecting he a black American driving a nice car. Besides, multiple articles also support that the black community in America has since in history been experiencing similar inequities. Therefore, to create an effective criminal justice of America, the leaders in this section should focus on reforming the essential functions of police, including the policing system.

The Impact of Inappropriate Use of Police Force in the Society

In the act of maintaining law and order in society, the use of force has been one of the critical elements of policing. However, the use of force has become more prevalent in many regions across the United States of America, and it has impacted the people in many ways. First, the use of force policy has led to a considerable increase in the incidents of officer-related injuries and also deaths. Specifically, the police interactions with the racial minorities in the United States of America have been a day to day struggle with cases of brutality reported all through. The authoritative majority have posted strain on racial minorities. Due to the nature of the relationship between the police and citizens, the whole issue has shifted from trust to mistrust.

Secondly, the excessive use of police force has impacted the health of many citizens in the United States of America. For example, many of the black youths due to adverse of disproportioned and traumatic experiences of the often police arrests and unfriendly use of force against them and the involvement of race and the authorities are usually harmful.

There have been social impacts leading to psychological torture due to the recent effects of excessive use of police force. This is because when police misuse the power against the people inappropriately, many of the affected are left with the mindset that the police are inhuman. For example, a kid who has witnessed police using force on one of their relatives will at all times ran to hide when he sees a police officer in the street.

Apparently, the inappropriate use of police force against black Americans has led to a form of discrimination. This has, in turn, led to a socio-economic effect, generally including sexual orientation, gender identity, and mental health among the blacks.

Economically, the use of police force has affected the economy of many regions across the states. For example, cities like Pittsburgh can’t herald inclusive innovation without stepping up to protect black lives like Antwon Rose’s from the police. Therefore, it is evident that you can’t have an equitable economy while ignoring police violence within our society.

Conclusion

The paper has provided a detailed analysis of the concept of the appropriate use of police force and its relationship with the criminal justice system of America. In this context, the discussion has indicated why the use of inappropriate police force is an ordinary criminal injustice to American society. Eventually, the overall effects of improper use of police force on Americans, mainly to the minorities, have thoroughly been covered. Factually, some of the identified impacts in this context include and not limited to psychological, physical, and mental effects. Thus since evidence has shown that excessive use of police force has remained to be an issue of concern, professionals and leaders in the criminal justice system of American should take prompt actions to ensure that they redefine the policies governing police officers.
