Flashbulb Memories Theory

Flash memory is referring to as the highly detailed, exceptionally vivid ‘snapshot’ of the time and conditions in surprising and emotionally arousing. Flashbulb memory is autobiographic memory and highly in emotion content (Justice & Conway, 2017). Flashbulb memory was introduced as early as 1899 by a psychologist, F.W. Colegrove, conducting a study in when the participants were asked to clarify their memory of discovery of President Lincoln had been assassinated thirty-three years earlier. The theory of flashbulb memories presented by Brown and Kulik in the year 1977 Brown and Kulik discovered people having very vivid memories, especially when receiving news that includes exact doing, the weather, and even the smell of the air. The theorist believed that flashbulb memories are permanently stored, etched in one’s mind for eternity (Justice & Conway, 2017). The theory of flashbulb memories encourages the question of the meaning of a physiological basis. The study was conducted after the 9/11 terrorist attracts by Sharon et al. (2007). The outcomes were agreed with the theory of Brown, and Kulik suggested that the approach has a unique neutral basis, and engaging personal experiences must critically engage the impartial mechanism.

The main characteristics of a flashbulb memory are place, activity, informant, own effect, other effects, and the aftermath. The concept of flashback memory is soaring altitude of surprise, consequentiality, and emotional arousal (Talarico, 2016). The major criticism of flashback memory is that when there is the addition of mistaken features into their mind for the occurrence, that disinformation continues to be restated in later descriptions rather than to be corrected (Brewin,2016). Flashbulb memories are remarkable inconsistencies in many people’s memory, even though they are vivid. Flashbulb memories are not particularly accurate, but they are accomplished with high vividness and confidence. Flashbulb memory delays over time, just like daily memories, but their accuracy differentiates them from other memories.

My flashbulb memory is, it was on 8th July 2018; I can still remember this day when I heard the news that my friend escaped the death by a hair’s breadth while traveling. I thought that my friend is dead, but he survived death with an inch. The following day there was a party. Imagining that day, I will walk to my house with everyone cheering, and getting excited for tomorrow was a party, but I walk to another friend’s house and his coworkers sitting on the chairs and watching the news. I can recall it was five years ago when we heard the news that the bus that was carrying one of our friends had an accident. I was shocked by the story, but even now, I can’t forget.

I am confident about my accuracy because of the memories of what I heard I would never forget. Also, when I see my friend is having pain in his leg, it reminds me of what happened to him on that day he had an accident. My flashbulb is consistent with features and criticism of flashbulb memory because I have recall where I was, the time when I heard news, and the aftermath of what happened after I listened to the news. Although I am not very accurate with my flashbulb memory, I experienced great vividness and confidence. My memory had stored on one occasion, but I have retained for my lifetime.
