Early career
Boris Ivanov started his career soon after he graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) with an International Relations degree in 1983. He joined the USSR’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he worked as a diplomat. He was then posted to the Washington DC Soviet Embassy. While working in the embassy, he mainly dealt with arms control issues.
As a diplomat, this celebrated entrepreneur sharpened his negotiation skills, which would later be instrumental in his career as a business leader. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, he went on and joined the private sector. He worked at Unibest Bank in Russia as an executive, and among his roles was oversee oil and gas industry investments. Gazprombank was the next career stop for this celebrated business leader after Unibest Bank. Gazprombank is Russia’s third-largest bank, and at this institution, Boris started as an advisor to the Chairman.
