Functional Behavior Assessment

PART A

The functional assessment uses the conceptualization of the ideology of ABC. These letters are not just the alphabetical letters but rather have meaning embodied in them. The first letter, A, stands for Antecedent meaning precedence. Basically, these are the stimuli events or activities that come immediately before a certain behavior. In the same context, B means the Behavior itself and lastly, letter C stands for Consequences. Consequences are the events that follow a certain response regarding the student’s behavior.

Apparently, punishment means a painful response that is inflicted on somebody after doing something wrong for them to suffer as a lesson. An example is grounding a child for a week because of poor decision of opting to play with friends instead of doing house chores. On the other hand, consequences are the effects that are faced by an individual to make them learn from their mistakes. A good example is, a team getting defeated during a tournament after failing to practice regularly.

First and foremost, adults play as the child’s role model meaning that their behaviors have a lot of impact on the trends in child’s behavior as well. Moreover, they have a major role in supporting them emotionally when offering guidance. Besides, they should help them to know how to make wise decisions and solve problems so as to avoid either punishments or consequences. Finally, they ought to support the child’s efforts and teach them the importance of acceptable behavior.

When the Early Childhood Education notices that a certain behavior is harmful to a child, the first thing to do is to warn the child and show him or her that the behavior is bad. In addition, to this, they should understand and do a research on the behavior so that they can come up with a precise decision on how to stop it.

Inability to control their emotions sometimes children get angry, disappointed and frustrated just like any other normal human being. This makes them aggressive which can lead to inappropriate behavior like fighting. Pursuing further, emulation of ill behavior from other children is also a major cause. Children are usually exposed to different friends who have different kinds of behavior and due to lack of wise decisions, a child can find it awesome to copy bad behavior from others. Finally, the urge to gain independence can also lead to bad behavior among children. In order to gain freedom, children will always build a rebellious kind of behavior such as shouting or throwing insults to be given independence.

In studying any child’s behavior, the concept of ABC will be useful. I would use it immediately after I assess the child’s behavior. This is because I would have had a lot of information about the bad behavior, which would help me to base my conclusions on. I would study the behavior of the child before the start of the bad behavior. Then research on how the child manifested it and finally check the consequences the child was facing.

Before beginning the process of making a change to inappropriate behavior, I would consider the cause of the behavior, the consequences of the behavior, the impacts the behavior had to the surrounding people and the appropriate ways to end the behavior.

PART B

Personally, I don’t think those are better solutions to prevent Jamal from shouting at other children because he would feel that he is being pushed away which will even make him more rebellious. He will be thinking that his teachers don’t love him, he is being denied his right to read from the classroom and also he is being misunderstood and molested.

I would gather information why he was only the one being accused of hitting others since it would show if he’s always looking for trouble. Also, I would figure out what causes of his bad behavior because it would aid in ending it. Moreover, I would collect information whether he was feeling guilty after every incidence like this occurred.

Jamal should develop skills in controlling his emotions and interacting with other children peacefully and friendly. Furthermore, in order to reduce his shouting, he should also acquire effective communication skills. Moreover, to avoid hitting other children he should develop skills on how to solve misunderstandings peacefully.

The other children should also acquire skills on how to cope with aggressive people. Moreover, mitigation skills would help to solve misunderstanding among themselves. Also, skills on the relationship with other children would be of great aid.

The staff should have a well-defined set of rules on children misbehavior to help them to solve this issue. Besides, it should also be conversant with the behavior of the children by monitoring their moves. The staff ought to train the children on discipline and how to relate to one another. Also, the staff should motivate the children with good behavior to serve as a lesson to the others. All these will work hand in hand with improving the children behavior.

If another time Jamal hits another child, I would warn him the last time and tell him that if he repeats it again he would be punished thoroughly. This would help in playing with his psychology and create a fear in him. Also, I would threaten him by telling him that I would report the matter to the principal and his parents.
