Gender and Sexuality as Portrayed in Popular Culture
Stories have been told, and still, they are more to come through, plays were and are portrayed up to date, more so, articles have been written explaining how gender and sexuality are portrayed or rebelled in the popular culture. In popular culture, gender and sexuality are among the key sensitive things to be considered. Masculinity and feminity being the key points of consideration, gender roles well experiment in terms of masculinity and feminity. Although gender and sexuality are used interchangeably, they do not mean the same thing. For instance, Lindsey 1997 defines sex as the biological, hormonal, and chromosomal differences that determine if a person is a male or female. On the other hand, Eagly 1987, defined gender as the societies and individuals ascribe to male and female categories.
Beginning with education as a key aspect in terms of gender and sexuality, I do concur with what a lot of articles say. For instance, in most sociological countries, education was only made for males. No single lady was supposed to be educated until the women’s movement in the 20th century, which brought women to the forefront in a variety of societal arenas. Since education was for the male, no single lady was attached to any professional work. It was considered a very big offense for a lady to be skilled in any task.
Furthermore, due to the superiority of men and their masculinity, they were the ones to make decisions and decide what is right and what wrong, what to take, and what to spit. Although it was a cultural norm, I cannot concur with it since, in my opinion, that one was only done due to lack of knowledge, and I think the best to describe that is illiteracy. Interestingly, a lady was nowhere in a voting site was a big offense for a lady to vote. In short, ladies were the house workers, and their work includes; children’s care and education, among other house jobs that require no skilled personnel.
As I mentioned earlier, one striking characteristic of the 20th century was the women’s movement, which brought women to the forefront in a variety of societal arenas. As women won the right to vote, achieved reproductive freedom through birth control and legalized abortion, and gained access to education and employment, Western culture was forced to examine its long-held views about women and the roles they play in society. As a result, masculinity and feminity were highly affected in a way that it was measured according to education, profession, and leadership. The turn up was amazing since a lot of ladies ended up being more superior to men in almost all sectors, be it education or professionalism.
In a nutshell, masculinity and feminity are now described differently and opposite from the past. I think the idea that was portrayed in the early 20th was one of the marvelous ideas since up to now; ladies are allowed to be educated and work for the nation accordingly. By doing that, there is a mutual relationship between the couples since so many needs are handled as a team, and decision making is now for all.
